About McLeod Ganj for road travellers
McLeod Ganj is upper Dharamshala, about 7–10 km by road above the lower town at roughly 2,000 m. It's home to the Dalai Lama's temple complex and the Tibetan government-in-exile, and its streets are full of monasteries, cafés, bookshops and Tibetan restaurants. It's also the start of the Triund walk and the base for nearby Bhagsu and Dharamkot. The town is compact but steep, with narrow, partly one-way lanes, so some guesthouses are a short walk from the last point a car can reach. Kangra airport at Gaggal is about 18–20 km away.
