Overview

Delhi airport to McLeod Ganj is roughly 475–495 km, usually 10½ to 12½ hours by taxi: out of the airport onto the NH44, north through Haryana and Punjab, into the hills via Una and Kangra, and up from lower Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj at about 2,000 m. Many visitors from abroad fly into Delhi and want to reach McLeod Ganj without a connecting flight or an overnight bus. A taxi from arrivals does it in one long day, or two easy ones with a stop. We meet you at arrivals with a name board, track your flight, and drop you at your McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot stay.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1With a morning arrival, you'll reach McLeod Ganj by evening; later arrivals should rest near the airport first.
  • 2After a long flight, an SUV or Innova gives room to rest.
  • 3A night in Chandigarh breaks the trip into two halves of about five to six hours each.
  • 4The last climb from lower Dharamshala is steep and busiest in the late afternoon.
  • 5We track your flight; delays don't cost extra.

Taxi, connecting flight or bus?

There are three ways from Delhi airport to McLeod Ganj. A connecting flight to Kangra, about 1½ hours, then a 45-minute transfer, is fastest when it runs, but flights are fewer and more weather-sensitive. Overnight buses leave from the city, not the airport, so you'd need to cross Delhi first. A taxi from arrivals is the most direct: one long day, door to door, with your luggage in the car the whole way.

Arriving in McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square with narrow, partly one-way lanes. Hotels on the main roads are usually door to door; some guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a short walk from the last point a car can stop. Share your guesthouse name and a phone number when you book, and the driver will plan the nearest drop.

Breaking the trip in Chandigarh

After a long-haul flight, ten or more hours in a car is a lot. A night in Chandigarh, about five hours from the airport, splits the trip in two: rest the first evening, then drive the hill section fresh the next morning, arriving in McLeod Ganj by lunchtime. With the same car for both days, you pay for the extra day, not two separate trips.

  • Day 1: Delhi airport to Chandigarh
  • Day 2: Chandigarh to McLeod Ganj
  • Or straight through with a morning arrival

Travelling from abroad

If you're arriving from abroad, a few things make the trip easier: an Indian SIM card or eSIM for WhatsApp calls with the driver, some cash in rupees for tea stops and tips, and a downloaded offline map. Drivers speak Hindi and basic English; for anything complicated, message us on WhatsApp and we'll translate.

The route from the airport

Leaving Terminal 3, the driver takes the airport expressway onto Delhi's ring roads and the NH44 north through Haryana. The highway is fast and well served by dhabas, with Murthal the classic breakfast stop. At Ludhiana or Kiratpur, the route turns towards the hills through Ropar, Anandpur Sahib and Una, then crosses the Kangra valley before the final climb through lower Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj.

The hill section, from Una onwards, takes three to four hours. Arriving before dark matters here, because the last climb to McLeod Ganj is narrow and busy in the evening. That's why we recommend a night in Chandigarh for any flight landing after about 10 am.
