Overview

Kangra airport to McLeod Ganj is roughly 15–20 km, usually 45 minutes to an hour by taxi: from the small terminal at Gaggal along the road to Dharamshala, then up the hill through the cantonment to McLeod Ganj at about 2,000 m. It's the quickest way to reach McLeod Ganj from Delhi, with flights of around 1½ hours instead of a ten-hour drive. Gaggal is a small airport and flights are sometimes delayed or cancelled by weather, so we track your flight and the driver waits. We meet you at arrivals with a name board and drop you at your hotel, or as close to your Bhagsu or Dharamkot guesthouse as the lanes allow.

Meeting your driver at Gaggal

Kangra airport is a small, single-terminal airport, so meeting your driver is simple: walk out of the arrivals door and look for the name board. You'll get the driver's name, photo and phone number on WhatsApp before you fly. If you have checked bags, they come out quickly here, and you're usually on the road within 15 minutes of landing.

Where in McLeod Ganj we drop you

McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square with narrow, partly one-way lanes, and parts of Jogiwara Road and Temple Road can be closed to traffic at busy times. Most hotels on the main roads are door to door. In Bhagsu, most stays are close to the road; in Dharamkot, some homestays need a short walk with luggage. Tell us where you're staying and the driver will plan the nearest drop.

  • Bhagsu: mostly close to the road
  • Dharamkot: some stays need a short walk

Flying to McLeod Ganj vs driving

From Delhi, the flight to Kangra takes about 1½ hours, compared with ten or more hours by road. For a short trip, flying in saves a full day each way. The trade-off is reliability: Gaggal's flights are more weather-sensitive than big airports', especially in the monsoon and on winter mornings. If you have an important onward connection, keep a buffer day, or fly in and drive out.

Going on from McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj makes a good first stop in the Kangra valley. From here, Bir's paragliding site and Palampur's tea gardens are two to three hours east, Dalhousie and Khajjiar about four to five hours north-west, and Manali a long day's drive. You can keep the same car for a multi-day trip or book transfers as you go.
