The short answer
Spiti has its own calendar: the road from Manali over Kunzum La is normally closed by snow for much of the year, roughly October to June, so summer is the usual Spiti season.
| Months | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| March–June | Pleasant days, cool nights, roads open; busy with Indian holidaymakers in May and June | Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, first-time visits |
| July–August | Monsoon: heavy rain, green valleys, landslide risk on the Mandi–Kullu highway | Flexible travellers; avoid tight schedules |
| September–November | Clear skies and the best mountain views; festivals in October | Photography, trekking, all main towns |
| December–February | Cold, snow in Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie; some high roads closed | Snow lovers, quiet hotels, shorter days |
Spring and early summer (March to June)
Spring brings fruit blossom in the valleys and comfortable sightseeing weather. By May and June, Indian school holidays make Shimla and Manali busy, with weekend traffic on the main highways, so start drives early and book hotels ahead. Rohtang Pass usually opens to tourists in late spring or early summer, once snow is cleared.
Monsoon (July and August)
The monsoon makes Himachal lush, but it's the riskiest time for road travel. The Kiratpur–Manali highway between Mandi and Kullu has suffered serious flood and landslide damage in recent monsoons, and Dharamshala is one of the wettest places in India. If you travel now, keep a spare day in your plans and choose a driver who checks road status each evening. Paragliding at Bir and river rafting usually pause.
Autumn (September to November)
After the rains, the air clears and the Himalayan views are at their best: our favourite season for first-time visitors. October is festival month. Kullu Dussehra starts on Vijayadashami, the day the rest of India ends the festival, and runs for a week; in 2026 that's 20 to 26 October, when the valley's village deities are carried into Kullu in procession. Expect Kullu's hotels and roads to be busy that week.
Winter (December to February)
Winter brings snow to Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie, which is beautiful, but it also means short days, cold mornings and occasional road closures beyond the main towns, such as the roads to Kufri and Narkanda or the high road beyond Solang. Lower towns like Dharamshala stay mild. Flights into Kullu's small airport are often disrupted in winter, so we usually suggest flying into Chandigarh instead.
Festivals worth planning around
Festival dates follow lunar calendars and change every year, so confirm them before you book.
- Kullu Dussehra (October): a week of processions and fairs in Kullu; 20–26 October in 2026.
- Losar (Tibetan New Year, usually February or March): celebrated in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj and in Spiti's monasteries. Dates follow the Tibetan calendar, so check them each year.
- Holi (usually March): the spring festival of colours, celebrated across North India.
- Diwali (October or November): the festival of lights, when Indian travel peaks and highways get busy.
