About Sangla for road travellers
Sangla is the main town of the Baspa valley, also called the Sangla valley, in Kinnaur, at about 2,700 m. The valley road leaves the Sutlej highway at Karcham, about 200 km from Shimla, and climbs to Sangla before running on to Rakchham and Chitkul. Apple orchards, wooden houses and snow peaks surround the town, and Kamru village, about 2 km above, has an old tower fort that was once the seat of the Bashahr rulers. Sangla is the natural overnight on the way to Chitkul, and a good place to adjust to the altitude.
