Activities by season

Months are a guide only: operators stop when the weather, river level or snow says so, and the monsoon in July and August halts most river and air sports.

Paragliding

Tandem paragliding at Solang is the most popular adventure activity in Manali. You fly strapped to a licensed pilot, so no experience is needed. Operators sell short flights from the lower slope and longer ones from higher take-off points reached by car or ropeway. Prices vary with flight length, from roughly ₹1,000 to ₹3,000–4,000 according to operators.

For serious flying, Bir Billing, a day's drive away, is India's best-known paragliding site. See our Bir Billing guide.

River rafting on the Beas

Rafting runs on stretches of the Beas south of Manali towards Kullu, with short runs of easy to moderate rapids suited to beginners and families with older children. The river is fast and cold with snowmelt, so wear the life jacket and helmet provided, listen to the safety briefing and don't raft after heavy rain, when the river rises quickly. Rafting usually stops in the monsoon.

Skiing and snowboarding

Solang valley is Manali's ski slope from about January to February, with beginners' slopes, equipment rental and local instructors. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in Manali runs formal skiing and mountaineering courses for those who want structured training. Snow cover depends on the winter, so check conditions before planning a ski trip.

Treks from Manali

Multi-day treks need fitness, acclimatisation and a registered guide or trekking company. Our taxis drop off and pick up at trailheads such as Jobra for Hampta, and at Chatru or Chandratal at the far end.

  • Jogini falls: an easy half-day walk from Vashisht to a tall waterfall. Good for families.
  • Lamadugh: a steeper day hike through forest to meadows above Manali.
  • Hampta Pass: a classic 4 to 5-day crossing at about 4,270 m from the green Kullu side to the bare Lahaul side, usually ending with a visit to Chandratal.
  • Bhrigu Lake: a 3 to 4-day trek to a high alpine lake at about 4,300 m.
  • Beas Kund: a 3-day trek to the glacial source area of the Beas, below Hanuman Tibba.

Choosing a safe operator

  • Ask for proof of registration with the state tourism department.
  • Check the equipment: harnesses, helmets, life jackets and ropes should be in good condition.
  • Agree what's included, how long it lasts and the total price before paying.
  • Respect weather calls: a good pilot or rafting guide will cancel in bad conditions.
  • Mention any health issues, back problems or pregnancy before you start.
  • Check whether your travel insurance covers adventure sports.

Planning an adventure day

Solang activities are on the same road as the Atal Tunnel, so a full day can combine paragliding or skiing with a trip through the tunnel to Sissu. Rafting is south of Manali, and fits on the way to or from Kullu, Kasol or the airport at Bhuntar. Our Manali adventure package bundles these with hotels and a car.
