About Mandi for road travellers
Mandi is an old princely town at about 760 m where the Suketi meets the Beas, on the Chandigarh–Manali highway about 195 km from Chandigarh. Its stone temples, among them Bhutnath, Panchvaktra and Tarna Devi, have earned it the name 'Varanasi of the hills', and every February or March the International Shivratri fair brings deities from across the district into town. Rewalsar lake, sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs, is about 25 km away, and Prashar lake, at roughly 2,730 m, about 45–50 km. IIT Mandi's campus is at Kamand, north of town.
