Manali vs Shimla: Which Should You Visit?

Shimla and Manali are Himachal's two most visited hill towns, about 245 km apart by road, and many people can only fit one into a trip. They're quite different. Shimla is the colonial-era state capital on a ridge, closer to Delhi and easier for a short break. Manali is higher, more alpine, and the gateway to snow passes, adventure sports and the roads to Lahaul and Ladakh. Here's how they compare and how to choose. It's part of our Manali travel guide.

Getting there

Shimla is far easier to reach. From Chandigarh it's a three- to four-hour drive, and the Kalka–Shimla toy train is an experience in itself. A long weekend from Delhi works well. Manali is a full day's drive from Delhi, or an overnight bus, so it really needs four days or more to be worthwhile.

Snow

Both towns get snow in winter, mostly from late December to February, but in recent winters Shimla's town has often had less reliable snow than Manali's surroundings. For a near-certain snow day in January or February, Manali has the edge: Solang and the Lahaul side beyond the Atal Tunnel are higher and colder. From Shimla, the usual snow trips are Kufri and, more reliably, Narkanda. Our snow guide covers both in detail.

Things to do

Shimla's appeal is its old-world town: the Ridge and Mall Road, Christ Church, the Viceregal Lodge at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Jakhoo temple, and day trips to Kufri, Chail and Narkanda. It's gentle and walkable.

Manali is more about nature and activity: the Hadimba temple in its cedar forest, Old Manali, the Vashisht hot springs, Solang's ropeway and paragliding, the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang Pass, rafting on the Beas, and treks. It also leads on to Kasol, Lahaul, Spiti and Leh.

Crowds and cost

Both are crowded in peak season, from late May to June and over New Year. Shimla gets more weekend traffic from Chandigarh and Delhi; Manali gets longer stays and heavier traffic on the road to Solang and Rohtang. Hotel prices are broadly similar for the same standard, though Manali has more budget guesthouses and hostels. Transport to Manali costs more because it's further.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Shimla for a short break of two or three days, the toy train, heritage, or travel with elderly parents.
  • Choose Manali for snow, mountains, adventure, honeymoons and trips of four days or more.
  • Do both on a week-long trip: Delhi to Shimla, two nights; Shimla to Manali, three nights; then back to Delhi or Chandigarh.

Doing Shimla and Manali together

The drive from Shimla to Manali takes about 7 to 9 hours via Mandi and Kullu, through the hill country of Sundernagar and along the Beas. A private car lets you break the journey with stops. Most combined trips run in the order Shimla first, then Manali, so the long drive back to Delhi starts from the closer end of the state. Our Shimla and Manali packages and car-only tours are built on this route.
