When Does It Snow in Manali and Shimla? A Month-by-Month Guide

Seeing snow is one of the main reasons people visit Himachal in winter, and the first question is always when. The honest answer is that snowfall varies a lot from year to year. Broadly, late December to February is the core snow season in both Manali and Shimla, with early March still possible. Here's what to expect month by month, where to go if the towns themselves are bare, and how winter affects your taxi plans.

Snow on the hills around Shimla

The short answer

Plan for late December to mid-February if snow is your priority. Manali, at about 2,050 m, generally sees more and longer-lasting snow than Shimla. Shimla's best chances are usually from late December through January. Snow isn't guaranteed in any given week, so a trip of several days, or flexible dates, gives you the best odds.

Month by month

This is a general pattern from travel guides and local experience, not a forecast; check the weather before you travel.

NovemberCold; snow on the high peaks, occasionally in town late in the monthCold, clear days; snow is rare

No snow in town? Where to find it

Even when town has none, there's often snow higher up. Near Shimla, Kufri, about 16 km away, is the usual snow-play spot. Above Manali, Solang valley and the approach to the Atal Tunnel hold snow much longer than town, though access depends on daily snow clearance and local restrictions.

Planning a snow trip that works

Build in flexibility. Book a few nights in Manali or Shimla rather than a single day, so you can head up to Solang or Kufri on the clearest, snowiest day. Keep the same car and driver for the stay; they'll know each morning which roads are open and where the snow is best.

If you're flying, Kullu's Bhuntar airport is closest to Manali but its flights are often disrupted in winter weather. Chandigarh airport, with a road transfer of about 7–9 hours to Manali or 3–4 hours to Shimla, is the more reliable choice in January and February.

Travelling by road in snow season

Main roads into Shimla and Manali are usually cleared quickly, but heavy snowfall can close higher roads for a day or more, and sometimes the last few kilometres to a hotel. When that happens, taxis may need to drop you at the nearest open point.

  • Leave extra time and start early: daylight is short in winter.
  • An SUV with good tyres is a better choice than a sedan for snowy stretches.
  • Hotels on steep lanes may need a short walk after snow; pack shoes with grip.
  • We check road conditions the evening before each winter pickup.

What to pack

Temperatures can drop well below freezing at night. Bring thermal layers, a warm jacket, gloves, a hat and waterproof shoes. Snow clothing and boots can also be hired cheaply at Solang and Kufri.
