Things to do in Kufri
- Mahasu peak: the highest point around Kufri, with the Mahasu Naag temple at the top and views of the snow ranges on clear days. Most people go up on ponies along a rough, often muddy track.
- Himalayan Nature Park: a park with Himalayan animals and birds in large enclosures, on the highway near Kufri.
- Kufri Fun Campus: an amusement park with rides and a go-kart track billed as one of the highest in the world.
- Indira Tourist Park: a viewpoint area with wide views over the hills.
- Snow play and skiing: in a snowy winter, the slopes become a playground for sledging, and a short ski track opens through the fields.
- Fagu: a quieter village a few kilometres further along the highway, with open views and potato farms.
Snow at Kufri: when to go
Kufri gets snow more often than Shimla because it's higher and more exposed. The best chance is from late December to February. In a dry winter there may only be patches, or none, and in that case Narkanda, about 63 km from Shimla and higher still, is the better bet.
After a heavy snowfall the police sometimes close the highway beyond Dhalli to cars until it's cleared, and only vehicles fitted for snow are let through. Check conditions the evening before, and keep a flexible day in your plan.
Pony rides and prices
Pony and horse rides up to Mahasu peak are run by local operators, with rates set locally and displayed at some stands. Agree the price, the route and how long you'll stay at the top before you set off, and make sure children ride with a handler. The track can be very muddy after rain or snow-melt, so wear shoes you don't mind ruining.
Entry tickets for the nature park and the amusement park are separate and change by season.
Planning a Kufri day from Shimla
Leave Shimla by 8 or 9 am, especially on weekends and snow days, when traffic backs up through Dhalli. A typical half day covers Kufri and the nature park; a full day adds Fagu, or Mashobra and Naldehra on the way back. In winter, aim to drive back by mid-afternoon before the road freezes.
A Shimla-based taxi is simplest, and drivers know where to stop and park. Our Shimla to Kufri page shows fares.
Tips
- Rent snow boots and suits only if there's snow on the ground; check fit and dryness first.
- Carry warm layers; Kufri is noticeably colder and windier than Shimla.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen on snow days.
- Keep cash for stalls and pony rides.
- Be patient with weekend traffic and avoid stopping on narrow bends.
