Places to Visit in Shimla: 20 Sights and Things to Do

Shimla packs its best sights into a small, walkable centre on a ridge at about 2,200 m, with the old colonial town on one side and forested hills falling away on the other. Beyond town, a ring of day trips leads to snow at Kufri and Narkanda, a maharaja's palace at Chail and quiet forests at Mashobra. This list covers the places most worth your time, grouped by how far they are, with what to expect at each. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

In the town centre (on foot)

Private cars aren't allowed on the Mall and the Ridge, so the centre is best explored on foot. Taxis drop you at the lift or the nearest road point, and from there everything below is within a short walk.

  • The Ridge: the open square at the heart of Shimla, with views of the hills and the Himalaya on clear days, and the town's gathering place in the evening.
  • Christ Church: the yellow neo-Gothic church on the Ridge, begun in 1844, one of the oldest churches in north India.
  • Mall Road: the pedestrian street of shops, cafés and colonial buildings running below the Ridge.
  • Scandal Point: the junction of the Ridge and the Mall, with the statue of Lala Lajpat Rai.
  • Gaiety Theatre: the restored Victorian theatre on the Mall, still used for performances.
  • Lakkar Bazaar: the market just beyond the Ridge known for wooden crafts and walking sticks.
  • The State Museum: Himachal art, miniature paintings and crafts, a short walk west of the centre.

A short ride or walk from the centre

  • Jakhoo temple: a Hanuman temple on Shimla's highest hill, about 2,455 m, with a 108-foot statue. Walk up from the Ridge or take the ropeway.
  • Viceregal Lodge: the former summer residence of the British viceroys, built in 1884–88, now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, with guided tours.
  • Annandale: the old racecourse and polo ground below the Ridge, now a helipad and golf course area with an army heritage museum.
  • Summer Hill and the Glen: quiet forest walks a few kilometres from the centre.
  • Tara Devi temple: a hilltop temple on the approach to Shimla with wide views.
  • Kali Bari temple: an old temple near the Ridge, popular with Bengali visitors.

Day trips from Shimla

These need a taxi and a half or full day. Our route pages give fares and timings for each.

  • Kufri (about 16 km by road): snow play in winter, the Himalayan Nature Park, pony rides to Mahasu peak and an amusement park.
  • Mashobra and Naldehra (about 12 and 22 km): deodar forests, the old Naldehra golf course and quiet walks.
  • Chail (about 46 km): the Maharaja of Patiala's palace and one of the world's highest cricket grounds, at 2,444 m.
  • Narkanda (about 63 km): apple country, Hatu peak and winter skiing slopes, at about 2,700 m.
  • Kasauli (about 77 km): a small, quiet colonial hill town towards Chandigarh.

Experiences worth adding

  • Ride the Kalka–Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage railway, one way.
  • Walk the Mall and the Ridge at sunset, when the town lights up.
  • Skate on the open-air ice rink below the Mall in a cold winter.
  • Try local food: siddu, chana madra and a Himachali dham.
  • Go for snow at Kufri or Narkanda between late December and February.

Things to do in Shimla by season

Winter (December to February) brings snow to the surrounding hills and sometimes to town; Kufri and Narkanda are the reliable snow trips. Spring (March to April) is mild and clear. Summer (May to June) is the busy season, warm in the day and cool at night, when the plains are at their hottest. The monsoon (July to September) is wet, misty and green, with landslide risk on the highways. Autumn (October to November) brings the clearest views of the snow peaks.

Our Shimla weather and best time to visit guide goes month by month.

Planning your days

The centre, Christ Church, the Mall and Jakhoo fit into one full day on foot. The Viceregal Lodge and the museum make a relaxed second morning. Kufri and Mashobra share a road east, and Narkanda lies further along it, so they combine well. Chail is south, and fits on the way to or from Chandigarh. Two to three days covers Shimla well; our Shimla itinerary guide has plans.
