Mashobra and Naldehra: Forests, Golf and Quiet Near Shimla

North of Shimla, a quiet road leads through deep deodar and pine forest to Mashobra and on to Naldehra, two small hill settlements that feel a world away from the Mall's crowds. Mashobra has orchards, forest walks and old retreats; Naldehra has one of the oldest golf courses in India, set in a meadow ringed by cedars. Together they make an easy half or full day from Shimla. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

Mashobra

Mashobra lies on a forested ridge just beyond Dhalli, at the edge of Shimla's suburbs. It's a place to slow down: walks along forest trails, apple and cherry orchards, and views over the valleys. The President of India's summer retreat, The Retreat, is here; it has been opened to visitors in recent years, but access and days change, so check before you go.

Many visitors choose a resort in Mashobra as a calmer base than central Shimla, with the town only half an hour away.

Naldehra

Naldehra is best known for its golf course, laid out in a forest meadow in the colonial period and often described as one of the oldest in India. Even if you don't play, the meadow and the cedar forest around it are lovely for a walk, a picnic or pony rides. Day visitors can usually play on payment of green fees; check with the course.

The road on from Naldehra descends steeply towards the Sutlej valley.

Tattapani hot springs

Further down the same road, at Tattapani on the banks of the Sutlej, natural hot springs feed bathing pools, and the area is known for river rafting in season. It's a long, winding drive, so combine it with Naldehra only if you start early and don't mind a full day in the car.

Planning the day

A half day covers Mashobra and Naldehra. A full day can add Kufri on the way out, since it's on the next road east, or Tattapani beyond Naldehra. Leave by 9 am on weekends to avoid traffic at Dhalli. In winter, these forest roads can hold snow and ice; your driver will judge what's safe.

Our Shimla taxi service covers these local trips; the Shimla to Kufri page gives an idea of local fares.

When to go

April to June and September to November are best for walks and golf. In winter, the forest is beautiful after snow, but some paths are icy. The monsoon brings mist, leeches on the forest trails and slippery roads.

Wear shoes with grip for the forest paths, carry a light jacket even in summer, and keep some cash for tea stalls and pony rides at Naldehra, where card payments aren't always possible.
