Shimla Itinerary: 1, 2, 3 and 4-Day Plans

How many days in Shimla is enough? Two to three full days suits most first visits: one for the old town on foot, one for Kufri and Mashobra, and one for Chail, Narkanda or the toy train. These plans assume you're already in Shimla; add the travel time from Delhi (7 to 9 hours) or Chandigarh (3 to 4 hours). Each one works with a private taxi for the out-of-town days. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

How many days in Shimla?

  • 1 day: the Ridge, the Mall and Jakhoo on foot. Possible as a stop on the way to Manali.
  • 2 days: the town, plus Kufri and Mashobra.
  • 3 days: add Chail or Narkanda, or the Viceregal Lodge and a slower pace.
  • 4 days or more: room for the toy train, Narkanda and Hatu peak, or Kasauli on the way back.

Shimla in 1 day

  • Morning: walk up to Jakhoo temple from the Ridge, or take the ropeway, for the views and the Hanuman statue.
  • Midday: Christ Church, the Ridge and Scandal Point, then lunch on the Mall.
  • Afternoon: Lakkar Bazaar for wooden crafts, and the State Museum or Gaiety Theatre.
  • Evening: the Mall and the Ridge at sunset, when the town lights up.

Shimla in 2 days

  • Day 1: the town on foot, as above.
  • Day 2: by taxi east to Kufri for the Himalayan Nature Park, pony rides or snow in winter, then Mashobra's forests on the way back. Add Naldehra's golf course if you start early.

Shimla in 3 days

Our Shimla 3-day package follows this pattern with hotels and car.

  • Days 1 and 2: as above.
  • Day 3: choose one. Chail for the palace and the high cricket ground (about 46 km). Narkanda for apple orchards, Hatu peak and snow in winter (about 63 km). Or a slower morning at the Viceregal Lodge and Annandale.

Shimla in 4 days

Our toy train package builds the train ride into the trip, so you don't need to worry about connections.

  • Days 1 to 3: as above.
  • Day 4: ride the toy train down to Kalka, with your taxi meeting you there, or drive out via Kasauli for a final night in its quiet lanes before Chandigarh.

Snow season versus summer

From late December to February, put Kufri and Narkanda early in your stay, because snow can close the roads for a day after a heavy fall, and keep one day flexible. Evenings are cold, so plan indoor time in the late afternoon. Christmas and New Year are very busy.

From April to June, the weather is perfect for walking, but the town is crowded. Do the Mall early in the morning, and save the busy evening Ridge scene for one night. In October and November, the clearest weather of the year makes Narkanda and Hatu peak especially rewarding.

Shimla with Manali and beyond

Shimla pairs naturally with Manali, about 245 km away: two nights in Shimla and three in Manali make a classic week from Delhi. Shimla is also the start of the Kinnaur road to Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa, and of the summer route into Spiti. Our tour packages and car-only circuits cover these combinations.

Frequently asked questions

How many days in Shimla is enough?+

Two to three days covers the town and the main day trips. Add a day for the toy train or Narkanda.

What can I do in Shimla in 3 days?+

Day 1 the town on foot, day 2 Kufri and Mashobra, day 3 Chail or Narkanda.

Can Shimla be done in one day?+

The town centre and Jakhoo, yes, on foot. Day trips like Kufri need a second day.

Should I visit Shimla or Manali first?+

From Delhi, Shimla first, then Manali, so you end at the far end and drive back via Chandigarh, or the other way round if your return is from Kullu airport.

Is a taxi needed for sightseeing in Shimla?+

Not for the centre, which is on foot. For Kufri, Mashobra, Chail and Narkanda, yes.

Can I do Shimla as a weekend trip from Delhi?+

Yes, leaving early Saturday or Friday night. The drive is 7 to 9 hours each way, so a long weekend is more relaxed.

Jakhoo Temple, Shimla: Hanuman Statue, Ropeway and How to Reach

Jakhoo temple crowns Jakhoo hill, the highest point in Shimla at about 2,455 m, and it's visible from almost everywhere in town thanks to the giant orange Hanuman statue beside it. The temple is dedicated to Hanuman, and the climb through deodar forest gives some of the best views over Shimla and the hills beyond. Here's how to get up, what to expect and how to deal with the famous monkeys. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

Shimla Food and Shopping: What to Eat and What to Buy

Eating and shopping are a big part of a Shimla trip. The Mall and its lanes are full of old bakeries, cafés and family restaurants, and the bazaars below sell everything from wooden walking sticks to Kinnauri shawls. This guide covers the local dishes worth trying, where to eat, what to buy and where to find it. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

Viceregal Lodge, Shimla: History, Tickets and Guided Tour

The Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill was the summer home of the British viceroys of India, built in 1884–88 when Shimla was the empire's summer capital. Its grey stone towers, panelled halls and lawns are among the finest colonial buildings in India, and some key meetings before Independence took place here. Today it houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, which runs guided tours for visitors. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

Where to Stay in Shimla: The Best Areas Compared

Where you stay in Shimla matters more than in most towns, because the centre is car-free and built on steep slopes. A hotel that looks close to the Mall on a map may be a long climb with luggage, while one on the Cart Road below is easy to reach but further from the views. This guide compares the main areas, who each suits and what to check before booking. We don't sell hotel rooms on their own, so it's a neutral guide to areas, not a list of properties. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.
