Shimla Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for 2 to 4 Days

Shimla is one of the more affordable hill trips from Delhi, because it's close and has stays at every price. The total depends mostly on how you travel, when you go and where you sleep. This guide breaks the budget into parts and gives sample totals. Prices change with the season, so treat every figure as indicative and check current rates before booking. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

Getting there

  • HRTC or private Volvo from Delhi: the cheapest way for one or two people. Fares vary by bus type and season; check the operator's site.
  • Train to Kalka plus the toy train: inexpensive in ordinary classes, more for the Shivalik Deluxe and reserved seats.
  • Private taxi from Delhi (about 350 km) or Chandigarh (about 115 km): priced per vehicle, so it gets cheaper per person as the group grows. Our route pages show current all-inclusive fares, including fuel, driver, tolls and Himachal entry tax.
  • Flights: usually to Chandigarh, then a taxi. Shimla's own airport has few flights.

Where you stay

Prices rise sharply from May to June, at Christmas and New Year and on long weekends, and fall in March, the monsoon and November. Rough ranges per room per night in normal season:

TypeIndicative price per night
Hostel bed or very basic roomAbout ₹500–1,200
Budget hotel or homestayAbout ₹1,200–2,500
Mid-range hotelAbout ₹3,000–6,000
Heritage or upscale hotelAbout ₹8,000 and above

Sightseeing and entry fees

The town centre is free to walk. Fixed costs to add are small: the public lift between Cart Road and the Mall charges a few rupees, the Jakhoo ropeway has its own ticket, and the Viceregal Lodge's guided tour costs ₹100 for Indian adults (₹50 for children aged 5 to 12 and seniors, ₹500 for foreign nationals) according to the institute's tourist page.

Out-of-town trips are the bigger cost. A taxi for Kufri and Mashobra is a half or full day; Chail and Narkanda are full days. Our Shimla taxi service page and the route pages list fares for each. Pony rides and activities at Kufri are priced locally, so agree before you start.

Food and extras

  • Food: dhabas and simple cafés are inexpensive; Mall Road restaurants and hotels cost more. Budget roughly ₹500–1,500 per person per day.
  • Snow gear rental in Kufri or Narkanda in winter: a few hundred rupees per person.
  • Parking, if you drive yourself: limited and charged, mostly in multi-level car parks.
  • Shopping: woollens, wooden crafts from Lakkar Bazaar, and fruit preserves.

Sample budgets

Rough totals for illustration, excluding shopping, in normal season. A budget couple for 3 days by Volvo, staying in a budget hotel and taking one half-day taxi trip, might spend roughly ₹12,000–20,000 in total. A family of four for 3 days with a private taxi from Delhi, a mid-range hotel and two sightseeing days might spend roughly ₹40,000–70,000. Peak weeks push hotel costs well above these.

For an exact figure, send us your dates and group size, and we'll quote the transport. Our packages show a per-person price with hotels and car.

Ways to save

  • Avoid weekends and the peak weeks.
  • Travel as a group in one car: taxis are priced per vehicle.
  • Stay a little outside the centre, near Chhota Shimla or on the road to Mashobra, for better value.
  • Combine Kufri and Mashobra in one outing, and Chail on the drive in or out.
  • Book the toy train early for ordinary-class fares.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shimla trip cost for 2 people?+

Roughly ₹12,000–20,000 for three days on a budget by bus and budget hotel. A private car and better hotels cost more, and peak season raises prices.

What is the budget for a 3-day Shimla trip from Delhi?+

It depends on transport and hotel. Use the sample budgets here as a guide, and ask us for an exact transport quote.
