Overview

Flying into Delhi and heading straight for Shimla is a long day: roughly 360 km and 8–9 hours on the road after you clear arrivals. The drive itself is easy for the first five hours on the NH44 expressway; the final 90 km from Kalka climbs nearly 2,000 m through bends that are hard going after a long-haul flight. We plan the transfer around your landing time rather than a fixed slot, so a delayed flight just moves the pickup. If you land late at night, we will usually suggest a hotel near the airport and a 6 am start, which gets you up the hill in daylight and costs far less than a second day of travel recovering.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Share your flight number: the driver tracks your arrival and waits at the terminal pickup point without extra charge for delays.
  • 2Overnight international arrivals: a few hours' sleep near the airport and an early start is safer than starting the hill section after dark.
  • 3Ask for a stop at an ATM or SIM counter before you leave the airport; there is little time for errands once on the expressway.
  • 4Friday evenings and long weekends add 2+ hours at the Zirakpur and Parwanoo bottlenecks.

Worthwhile stops on the way

  1. Indira Gandhi International Airport

    Pickup

  2. Murthal

Highway dhabas about 70 km from the airport; the usual first meal stop.

  3. Pinjore Gardens

Terraced Mughal gardens just before the climb, good for stretching your legs.

  4. Dharampur

Halfway up the hill section; tea and a short break before the final bends.

  • Snow likely, roads can close
  • Monsoon, landslide risk
  • Fine, check weather
Dec–Feb: fog on the Punjab–Haryana plains can slow early-morning starts; snow occasionally closes roads beyond Shimla, not usually Shimla itself.
Jul–Aug: monsoon slides occasionally slow the Parwanoo–Solan section; we add buffer time to the plan.

Pickup options

  • • Delhi Airport T1, T2 and T3 arrivals
  • • Aerocity hotels
  • • Any Delhi NCR address if you'd rather start the next morning

Other ways to travel

Connect by air to Chandigarh and take a shorter transfer, or take a Volvo bus from Delhi (no airport pickup). A private car from arrivals avoids transfers with luggage.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Delhi Airport to Shimla cab cost?+

Starting one-way fares are Sedan ₹8,300, SUV ₹10,450, Toyota Innova Crysta ₹11,500, Tempo Traveller ₹18,700, all-inclusive with fuel, driver, tolls and Himachal entry tax. Your exact taxi price is confirmed in writing on WhatsApp before you book.

Is it better to fly Delhi to Chandigarh and drive from there?+

Often, yes. A connecting flight to Chandigarh (IXC) cuts the road time to about 3.5–4.5 hours. We can quote both options so you can compare total cost and time.

What happens if my flight is delayed?+

Nothing extra to pay. We track the flight number and the driver waits; we only re-plan if the delay pushes the hill drive late into the night.

Where will the driver meet me?+

At the arrivals pickup area of your terminal. You get the driver's name, photo and number on WhatsApp before you land.

Can I pay by international card?+

Yes, the advance can be paid online with international cards. Prices are in INR and any conversion shown is approximate.

Arriving at Delhi Airport: A Calm Guide for First-Time Visitors

Delhi's airport is big and busy, and the first hour after a long-haul flight can feel overwhelming. The good news: everything you need, from cash and a SIM card to a safe ride, is inside the arrivals hall. This is the order we suggest to our own guests, plus how to decide whether to head for the hills the same day.

Adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle Trip

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is India's classic first trip, and the Himalayan foothills of Himachal are the perfect contrast to it: cool air, pine forest and mountain towns after the heat and crowds of the plains. The question is how to connect them without wasting days. Here's how the pieces fit, with honest drive times.

Tipping Your Driver in India: How Much, When and How

Tipping is the question visitors ask us most often after price. In India a tip for a private driver is customary but not compulsory, and it isn't included in a taxi fare. The amounts are modest by Western standards, which makes people unsure whether they're giving too little or too much. Here's what's usual for transfers and multi-day trips, based on current travel-industry guidance, plus a few practical tips on handing it over.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.
