Overview
Shimla to Kasol is roughly 210–230 km, usually 7 to 9 hours by taxi: down from Shimla via Ghaghas and Sundernagar to Mandi, up the Beas through the Aut tunnel to Bhuntar, then about 31 km up the Parvati valley through Jari to Kasol. It links Himachal's colonial capital with its backpacker valley, and it's a common leg for travellers doing Shimla first and then the Parvati valley's cafés, treks and hot springs. The last hour, up the narrow valley road, is the slowest. We pick you up from your Shimla hotel's nearest vehicle point and drop you in Kasol, Chalal, Manikaran or Tosh.

Shimla to the Parvati valley
The drive has three distinct parts. First, the descent from Shimla's ridge through apple country to Ghaghas and the Sundernagar plain. Then the main highway up the Beas, through Mandi, the Pandoh dam area and the long Aut tunnel into the Kullu valley. Finally, at Bhuntar, the turn into the Parvati valley, where the road narrows and follows the river through pine forest to Kasol.
It's a long day, but varied, and Mandi's old temples make a good midday break.
Things to do in Kasol
Kasol is the Parvati valley's main base, at about 1,580 m, with riverside cafés, guesthouses and the start of several treks. Manikaran, about 4 km further, has a gurudwara and hot springs. Kheerganga, a trek of about 12 km from Barshaini with hot springs at the top, and the villages of Tosh and Malana are the classic outings. Chalal, across the river, is a short walk through the forest.

- Kheerganga trek from Barshaini
- Tosh village

Shimla, Kasol and Manali in one trip
A popular loop is Shimla, then Kasol, then Manali, about 75 km from Kasol via Kullu, and back to Chandigarh or Delhi. Doing it in this order means the long Shimla–Kasol drive comes early, while you're fresh, and the shorter Kasol–Manali leg comes next. Keeping one car and driver for the whole loop saves arranging local taxis in each valley.
Where to get dropped
Kasol's main road runs along the river, and most guesthouses are close to it. Chalal is across the river, reached by a footbridge, so the car stops on the Kasol side. Manikaran and Tosh are further up the valley; tell us your stay and the driver will go as close as the road allows.
Arriving in Kasol
The last hour, from Bhuntar up the Parvati valley, is narrow and winding, and busy with buses and trekkers in season. Kasol's main road is short, and parking is tight in the evening, so the driver may stop at the nearest wide point to your guesthouse. Mobile data can be patchy in the valley; download offline maps and share your guesthouse's phone number with us.
