Overview

Kasol to Manali is about 75 km, usually 2½ to 3 hours by taxi: down the Parvati valley to Bhuntar, roughly 50 minutes, then north up the Kullu valley past Kullu town to Manali. It's one of the most common transfers for backpackers and families combining the Parvati valley's quiet with Manali's snow points and adventure sports. Online maps show under two hours, but the narrow valley road and Kullu traffic usually add time. We pick you up at your Kasol stay, or anywhere up the valley, and drop you at your Manali hotel.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Kasol by mid-morning to clear Kullu town before evening traffic.
  • 2Coming down from Tosh or Barshaini? We can pick you up at the road head.
  • 3The Parvati valley section is slow and narrow; the highway after Bhuntar is quicker.
  • 4Stop in Kullu for shawls or lunch, or take the Naggar road for the last stretch.
  • 5In the monsoon, slides on either valley road can add time; we check the night before.
  • 6If you're carrying trekking gear, an SUV's boot space makes the transfer easier.

From the Parvati valley to Manali

The drive has two halves. The first, down the Parvati valley, is a narrow road along the river through pine forest and small villages. The second, from Bhuntar, joins the main Kullu valley highway, wider and busier, following the Beas north past orchards to Manali. If you have time, the left-bank road via Naggar makes the last part quieter and more scenic.

In Manali, most hotels are reachable by car, but some in Old Manali and Vashisht are up narrow lanes. Send us the name and the driver will stop at the closest point.

Planning the Manali part

Arriving from Kasol in the early afternoon leaves time for Hadimba temple and Old Manali the same day. Over the following days, Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel make an easy day, and Rohtang Pass needs a permit and a very early start. We can arrange all of these with a local Manali taxi.

  • Solang Valley: about 14 km from Manali.
  • Sissu via the Atal Tunnel: about 41 km.
  • Rohtang Pass: about 51 km, permit required.

When to leave Kasol

Mid-morning is the sweet spot. Leaving around 9–10 am means you're through the narrow Parvati valley road before the afternoon traffic of buses and trucks, and past Kullu before its evening rush. You reach Manali in time for lunch and a first walk around Old Manali or the Mall.

Leaving later in the day is fine in the quieter months, but in the peak season of May–June and October, the Kullu–Manali stretch can slow to a crawl after 4 pm.

Where to stay in Manali

Old Manali, across the Manalsu stream, is the backpacker and café quarter, with guesthouses up steep lanes. Vashisht, on the other side of the Beas, has hot springs and a village feel. The Mall Road area has the most hotels, the bus stand and taxi stand, and is easiest for families with luggage. Aleo and Prini, a little south of town, are quieter with river views. Tell us where you're staying so the driver can plan the drop.
