Overview

Dalhousie to Manali is roughly 340–390 km depending on the route, usually 9½ to 11 hours by taxi: down from Dalhousie through Banikhet and Nurpur, east along the Kangra valley past Kangra, Palampur and Baijnath, over the hills to Mandi, then up the Beas through Kullu to Manali. It's the longest of Himachal's hill-to-hill transfers, linking the quiet west of the state with its busiest resort. Most travellers break it with a night in Dharamshala, Palampur or Bir, which turns one very long day into two scenic ones. We pick you up from your Dalhousie or Khajjiar hotel and drop you at your Manali hotel.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1For a single day, leave Dalhousie by 6 am; you'll reach Manali in the evening.
  • 2Breaking the trip in Dharamshala, Palampur or Bir is strongly recommended, especially with children or older passengers.
  • 3The Mandi–Kullu gorge is the slowest stretch of the second half.
  • 4Monsoon slides near Joginder Nagar and in the gorge can add hours in July–August.
  • 5In winter, snow can slow the start in Dalhousie and the arrival in Manali.

Where to break the journey

Three stops work well. McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala, about 3½ to 4½ hours from Dalhousie, is the most popular, with monasteries, cafés and the Dalai Lama's temple. Palampur, an hour further, is quieter, with tea gardens. Bir, a little beyond, is the paragliding capital; in season you can fly the next morning before driving on to Manali, about five to six hours away.

With the same car for both days, the driver stays with you overnight and you only pay for the extra day.

  • McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala
  • Palampur
  • Bir (paragliding)

Why travellers make this trip

Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamba make up the quiet western corner of Himachal; Manali is the busy, snowy north. Many visitors who fly into Amritsar or arrive by train at Pathankot start in Dalhousie and end in Manali, then fly home from Bhuntar or drive down to Chandigarh or Delhi. It saves backtracking and shows you most of the state's character in one trip.

Which way does the driver go?

The usual route runs through the Kangra valley via Palampur and Joginder Nagar to Mandi. An alternative drops south to Una and Bilaspur and joins the Kiratpur–Manali four-lane; it's longer on the map but can be quicker when there's road work in the hills. That's why published distances range from about 340 to 390 km. The driver chooses on the day unless you'd like a particular route.

Arriving in Manali

Manali's hotels are spread across the Mall Road and Model Town, Old Manali and Vashisht. Some stays in Old Manali and Vashisht are a short walk from where cars can stop, so tell us your hotel when you book. If you'd like to visit Rohtang Pass, it needs a permit and usually a Manali-registered taxi; we can arrange that for another day.

Planning around the season

In spring and autumn, both ends are pleasant and the drive is at its best. In the monsoon, the Kangra hills and the Mandi–Kullu gorge are the risky stretches, so splitting the trip with a night in Dharamshala or Palampur makes sense even for travellers who'd normally push through. In winter, Dalhousie and Manali may both have snow, so the driver checks both ends before setting out.
