Overview

Amritsar to Manali is roughly 390–410 km by road, usually 9 to 10½ hours by taxi: north to Pathankot, east through the Kangra valley past Palampur and Baijnath, down to Mandi, then up the Beas through the Kullu valley. It's a long but beautiful day, and the only direct road link between Punjab's holy city and Himachal's busiest hill station. Many travellers do it as a two-day trip with a night in Dharamshala or Palampur on the way, which turns it into one of the most scenic drives in the state. We pick you up from your Amritsar hotel, the airport or the station, and drop you at your Manali hotel.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1For a single-day trip, leave Amritsar by 5–6 am to reach Manali by early evening.
  • 2The plains stretch to Pathankot is quick; the Kangra valley and the Mandi–Kullu section are slower than the distance suggests.
  • 3Splitting the drive with a night in Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj or Palampur makes it far more comfortable.
  • 4In the monsoon, slides between Mandi and Kullu and around Joginder Nagar can close the road for hours.
  • 5Winter fog in Punjab (December–January) can delay early starts; we may move pickup later for safety.

One long day or two easier ones

In one day, this is a ten-hour drive with short stops. In two, it becomes a highlight of the trip. The most popular split is a night in McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala, about five hours from Amritsar, followed by a six- to seven-hour drive to Manali the next day through Palampur, Baijnath and Mandi. Another option is a night in Palampur or Bir, which leaves a shorter second day.

With the car booked for both days, the driver stays with you overnight, and you only pay for the extra day, not for a second one-way trip.

Golden Temple, Dharamshala and Manali in one trip

For international visitors, this route links three of north India's most memorable places. A common plan is two nights in Amritsar for the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Wagah border ceremony; two nights in McLeod Ganj for the Dalai Lama's temple and the Triund walk; and three or four in Manali for Old Manali, Solang and, in season, Rohtang or the Atal Tunnel. Fly home from Kullu–Manali airport at Bhuntar, from Chandigarh, or drive back down to Delhi.

  • Amritsar: 2 nights
  • McLeod Ganj: 2 nights
  • Manali: 3–4 nights
  • Return via Chandigarh or Delhi

Which way does the driver go?

There are two practical routes. The usual one runs through the Kangra valley via Palampur and Joginder Nagar to Mandi. The other runs south from Pathankot through Hoshiarpur and Una to Kiratpur, then up the four-lane through Bilaspur to Mandi. The Kangra route is more scenic and passes Dharamshala; the southern route can be quicker when there's road work in the hills. The driver chooses on the day unless you have a preference.

Arriving in Manali

Manali's hotels are spread across the Mall Road and Model Town, Old Manali across the Manalsu stream, and Vashisht on the far bank of the Beas. Some Old Manali and Vashisht stays are a short walk from the road, so tell us your hotel when you book. For Rohtang Pass, a permit is required and the trip is usually made in a Manali-registered taxi; we can arrange it for the day after you arrive.
