Shimla to Manali links Himachal's two most visited towns and is the backbone of most Himachal itineraries. The standard route descends to Sundernagar and joins the Kiratpur–Manali highway at Mandi. In summer, adventurous travellers can ask for the Jalori Pass route through the Tirthan valley, which is slower, more spectacular and only suitable for capable vehicles and dry weather.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Ask for an 8 am start; the Mandi–Kullu gorge is best driven by early afternoon.
  • 2The Jalori route is seasonal and narrow. We confirm feasibility the day before.
  • 3Shimla's restricted Mall area means pickups happen at the nearest permitted road; tell us your hotel and we'll confirm the meeting point the evening before.
  • 4If anyone in your group gets motion sick, the descent to Sundernagar is the twistiest part; a front seat and a light breakfast help.

Most of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kasol and Dalhousie, needs no special permit for foreign visitors beyond a valid Indian visa. This guide explains where the permit applies, how travellers report getting it, and how to plan a Spiti road trip around it.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. Bir Billing in the Kangra valley is India's best-known paragliding site. Pilots launch from Billing, a grassy ridge at about 2,400 m, and land in fields at Bir, roughly 1,100 m lower. Most visitors come for a tandem flight with a registered pilot, then stay on for the monasteries, cafés and walks. This guide covers when you can fly, how to plan around the weather, and the quickest ways to reach Bir by road or air.
