Overview
McLeod Ganj to Manali is roughly 210–245 km, usually 6½ to 8 hours by taxi: down from McLeod Ganj through Dharamshala, east along the Kangra valley past Palampur and Baijnath, over the hills via Joginder Nagar to Mandi, then up the Beas through the Kullu valley to Manali. It's the classic hill-to-hill transfer on the backpacker trail, from Tibetan monasteries and cafés to Manali's snow peaks, Old Manali and Vashisht. Stops at Bir's paragliding field or Palampur's tea gardens are easy to add. We pick you up from your McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot stay and drop you at your Manali hotel.

The backpacker trail between two hill towns
McLeod Ganj and Manali are the two hill towns almost every independent traveller in Himachal visits, and this drive links them. Buses run between them, usually with a change and often overnight. A taxi is direct, travels by day so you see the Kangra and Kullu valleys, and can stop wherever you like. Split between two or three travellers, it's often not much more than the bus plus the local taxis at each end.
Breaking the journey in Bir
Bir, a short detour from Baijnath, is India's best-known paragliding site, with a Tibetan colony, monasteries and cafés. Many travellers spend a night or two there between McLeod Ganj and Manali, flying in the morning when conditions allow. Paragliding stops each year from about 15 July to 15 September. Book McLeod Ganj to Bir and Bir to Manali as two legs, or keep the same car.
- McLeod Ganj to Bir: about 2–2½ hours
- Bir to Manali: about 5–6 hours
- Paragliding closed about 15 July–15 September
Arriving in Manali
Manali's stays are spread across the Mall Road and Model Town, Old Manali across the Manalsu stream, and Vashisht on the far bank of the Beas with its hot springs. Old Manali and Vashisht lanes are narrow, and some guesthouses are a short walk from where cars can stop. Share your stay's name and the driver will plan the drop.
Travelling from abroad
Carry some cash in rupees for tea stops and tips, and an Indian SIM or eSIM for WhatsApp calls with the driver. Drivers speak Hindi and basic English. For Rohtang Pass, a permit is needed and the trip is usually made in a Manali-registered taxi; we can arrange it for a later day.
Palampur and Baijnath on the way
Two easy stops break the first half of the drive. Palampur, about 1½ hours from McLeod Ganj, has tea gardens you can walk through and a small tea factory that sometimes welcomes visitors. Baijnath, about half an hour further, has a 13th-century stone temple to Shiva right beside the highway, one of the finest in the Kangra valley. Both fit easily into a morning without making the day much longer.
