Overview

McLeod Ganj to Dalhousie is roughly 120–135 km, usually 4 to 5 hours by taxi: down the hill through Dharamshala, west past Kangra airport through the lower Kangra hills towards Nurpur, and up through pine forest via Banikhet to Dalhousie at about 1,970 m. It links western Himachal's two best-known hill towns, Tibetan McLeod Ganj and colonial Dalhousie, and it's a natural leg of a Kangra–Chamba trip, usually followed by Khajjiar the next day. Leave after breakfast and you're in Dalhousie for a late lunch. We pick you up from your McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot stay and drop you at your Dalhousie or Khajjiar hotel.

From Tibetan town to colonial hill station

McLeod Ganj and Dalhousie feel completely different. McLeod Ganj is busy and lived-in, centred on the Dalai Lama's temple, with monasteries, cafés and walking trails. Dalhousie is spread over five hills, quieter and more old-fashioned, with churches, Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, and pine and deodar forest everywhere. Together they make a good contrast in a week-long trip through western Himachal.

Khajjiar and Chamba next

Most travellers who come to Dalhousie from McLeod Ganj spend the next day at Khajjiar, the meadow about 21–24 km away often called India's 'mini Switzerland', and many continue down to Chamba's stone temples on the Ravi. You can keep the same car for those days, which saves arranging local taxis in Dalhousie.

  • Day 1: McLeod Ganj to Dalhousie
  • Day 2: Khajjiar and Kalatop
  • Day 3: Chamba, or on to Pathankot or Amritsar

Leaving Dalhousie afterwards

From Dalhousie, the usual ways home are down to Pathankot, about 80 km and 2½–3 hours, for trains to Delhi; to Amritsar, about 4½–5½ hours, for flights; or back to Kangra airport, about 3½–4 hours. Tell us your exit plan when you book and we'll price the whole route together.

Breaking the journey

Four to five hours is manageable in one go, but there are a few worthwhile stops: Kangra Fort, a short detour near the start; Nurpur, with its fort ruins; and the views from the lower hills back towards the Dhauladhar range. With children or older passengers, a lunch break in Nurpur or Banikhet makes the day easier.

What the road is like

The first part of the drive is the descent from McLeod Ganj through the cantonment to lower Dharamshala and on to Gaggal, on busy but well-paved roads. West of Gaggal, the road crosses the lower, greener Kangra hills, passing small towns and tea stalls, with the Dhauladhar range behind you. After Nurpur, the climb to Dalhousie begins: a long, winding road through pine forest, gaining more than 1,500 m before Banikhet.

It's a pleasant, varied drive rather than a demanding one. Most of the time is spent on the hill sections, so the four to five hours goes by with plenty to see. In the monsoon, the lower hills are green and misty, but slides can slow the final climb; in winter, Dalhousie may have snow on the shaded bends.

Useful guides for this trip

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.

Permits Foreigners Need in Himachal: Kinnaur and Spiti

Most of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kasol and Dalhousie, needs no special permit for foreign visitors beyond a valid Indian visa. The exception is the border country of upper Kinnaur and Spiti, close to the Tibet frontier, where foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Indian citizens don't. This guide explains where the permit applies, how travellers report getting it, and how to plan a Spiti road trip around it.
