Overview

Delhi to Dalhousie is one of the longest drives we run: about 560 km and 10–12 hours. Most of it is fast NH44 highway across Haryana and Punjab, but the final 80 km from Pathankot is a slow mountain road that alone takes around three hours. We recommend either a 5 am start, or splitting the trip with a night in Amritsar (Golden Temple at sunset is worth it). Dalhousie spreads over several pine-covered hills, and Khajjiar's meadow is about 17 km further on, so it's worth planning a local day too.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1A 5 am start gets you onto the Pathankot hill road in daylight.

  • 3Driver duty-time rules mean very long single-day trips need an early start so the driver gets proper rest.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.

Permits Foreigners Need in Himachal: Kinnaur and Spiti

Most of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kasol and Dalhousie, needs no special permit for foreign visitors beyond a valid Indian visa. The exception is the border country of upper Kinnaur and Spiti, close to the Tibet frontier, where foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Indian citizens don't. This guide explains where the permit applies, how travellers report getting it, and how to plan a Spiti road trip around it.

Hire a Car with a Private Driver in Himachal

Hiring a car with a driver is the easiest way to see Himachal. You don't deal with hairpin bends, snow chains or mountain parking, and you stop wherever you like. Whether you need one transfer, a sightseeing day or ten days across the state, here's how our private driver service works and what it costs.
