Overview

Dalhousie to Chandigarh is roughly 310–340 km, usually 7 to 8 hours by taxi, on one of two routes: through the lower Kangra hills via Nurpur, Kangra and Una, or down to Pathankot and across the plains via Hoshiarpur, both finishing through Ropar into the Tricity. It's a full day, and the first two to three hours are a winding descent through pine forest. Chandigarh is a good exit for Dalhousie trips, with flights and fast trains onward. We pick you up from your Dalhousie or Khajjiar hotel and drop you anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula, at the airport or at the station.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Dalhousie by 7–8 am to reach Chandigarh by mid to late afternoon.

  • 3For an evening flight or train, allow a buffer of two to three hours.

Which way does the driver go?

The hill route via Nurpur, Kangra and Una is more scenic and passes the Devi temples at Chintpurni and, with a detour, Jwalamukhi. The plains route via Pathankot and Hoshiarpur is flatter for longer. Distances are similar, so the driver picks on the day. If you'd like a temple stop, tell us and we'll take the Una route.

Where in the Tricity we can drop you

We drop anywhere in the Tricity: homes and hotels in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, Chandigarh airport, Chandigarh railway station, and ISBT Sector 43 or 17. For a flight or train, tell us the time when you book and we'll plan the pickup with a buffer for the hill roads.

Adding a temple on the way home

Chintpurni, one of Himachal's most visited Shakti Peeths, sits just off the Una route. A stop for darshan adds about two hours, including the walk of about 1.5 km from the bus stand to the temple. It's a popular way to end a Dalhousie trip for families, and it doesn't add much distance. Sundays and the Navratris are busy, so weekday stops are quicker.

  • Chintpurni: about 2 hours extra
  • Anandpur Sahib: on the way
  • Naina Devi: a longer detour from Kiratpur

Taxi or bus

HRTC buses run from Dalhousie and Banikhet to Chandigarh, and trains run from Pathankot. A taxi goes door to door, leaves when you want, and lets you add temples or a lunch stop. It's the simplest option for families, groups and anyone with a flight to catch.

Leaving Dalhousie in winter and the monsoon

Dalhousie gets snow on 20–30 days in a typical winter, and the first hour of the drive, down through Banikhet, is the part most affected. After a fresh fall, the driver may wait for the road to be cleared or sanded, so build in time if you have a flight or train. In the monsoon, the same stretch can see small slides and fog, and visibility drops in the afternoon, which is another reason to leave early.

Once you're past Nurpur or Pathankot, the roads are lower and clearer in both seasons. Most of the uncertainty is in the first two hours, so that's where the buffer matters.

Weather & road conditions

March–June and September–November: the best months for the drive.
July–August: monsoon slides on the hill roads; leave early.
December–February: snow possible in Dalhousie, fog on the plains in the evening.

Pickup options

  • • Dalhousie hotels (Gandhi Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Mall Road)
  • • Banikhet and the Dalhousie bus stand
  • • Khajjiar (if you're staying there)

Other ways to travel

HRTC buses run from Dalhousie to Chandigarh. Trains run from Pathankot, and flights from Kangra and Amritsar.
