Overview
Kasauli to Chandigarh is roughly 55–65 km, usually 1½ to 2 hours by taxi: down through Garkhal to the highway at Dharampur, along the four-lane to Parwanoo, and across the plains through Pinjore and Zirakpur into the Tricity. It's one of the shortest hill-to-city drives in Himachal, which is why Kasauli is such a popular weekend escape. Most people leave after breakfast or lunch on the last day and are home within two hours. We pick you up from your Kasauli hotel, the Mall or Garkhal, and drop you anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula, at the airport or at the station.

Driving tips for this route

- 2The road down to Dharampur is narrow and winding; sit in front if you get car-sick.
- 3For a flight from Chandigarh, leave a buffer of an hour for weekend traffic.
- 4Kasauli's Mall Road is closed to most vehicles; the driver meets you at the nearest permitted point.
- 5Add Timber Trail or Pinjore gardens on the way down if you have time.

Beating the weekend traffic
Kasauli is so close to the Tricity that on Sundays half of it seems to drive home at once. The bottleneck is the highway from Parwanoo through Pinjore to Zirakpur, where traffic can crawl for an hour in the late afternoon. Leaving Kasauli before noon, or waiting until after dinner, saves a lot of time. On weekdays, the drive is easy at any hour.
Where in the Tricity we can drop you
We drop anywhere in the Tricity: homes and hotels in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, Chandigarh airport, Chandigarh railway station, and ISBT Sector 43 or 17. For a flight or train, tell us the time when you book and we'll plan the pickup with a buffer for the hill roads.
Stops on the way down
Two easy stops break the short drive. Timber Trail, near Parwanoo, has a cable car up to a hilltop resort with views back over the plains. Pinjore's Yadavindra gardens, a Mughal-style terraced garden just off the highway, is a pleasant half hour, especially in the evening when the fountains are lit. Tell us when you book and the driver will plan the timing.
- Timber Trail cable car
- Pinjore gardens
- Dharampur dhabas
Going on to Shimla instead
If you're heading deeper into the hills rather than home, Kasauli to Shimla is about 77 km and 2½–3 hours via Dharampur and Solan. Many travellers do Kasauli first, then Shimla, and return to Chandigarh from there.
Kasauli's roads and pickup points
Kasauli is a cantonment town, and much of it is managed by the army. The Upper and Lower Mall are closed to most private and taxi traffic, and some roads through the cantonment have restrictions at certain hours. That's why taxis usually pick up at the nearest permitted point to your hotel, often near the Kasauli bus stand, the Garkhal road or a hotel's own parking. Hotels outside the cantonment, on the Garkhal and Dharampur side, are usually door to door.
When you book, share your hotel name and a phone number, and the driver will call 15 minutes before arriving. If you're carrying heavy luggage, ask the hotel for help to the pickup point.
- Upper and Lower Mall: closed to most taxis
- Bus stand and Garkhal road: usual pickup points
- Hotels on the Dharampur side: usually door to door
