How to Reach Kasauli: From Chandigarh, Delhi and Shimla

Kasauli is the most accessible hill town in Himachal: just 58 km from Chandigarh and about 290 km from Delhi, up a short climb from the plains. There's no airport or railway station in town, but both are close. Here's every way to get there, how long it takes and which suits whom. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

Distances and travel times

Times are for a private car in normal traffic. Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are much slower.

By road

From Chandigarh, the route runs through Zirakpur and Pinjore to Parwanoo, where the hills begin, then up the four-lane highway towards Shimla as far as Dharampur, where you turn off for Kasauli. An alternative turn-off via Garkhal is shorter but narrower. From Delhi, take the NH44 to Ambala and Zirakpur and follow the same road.

A private taxi is the most comfortable option, especially for families, and can take you right to hotels on narrow lanes. Our Chandigarh to Kasauli and Delhi to Kasauli pages show fares by vehicle.

By train

Kalka, at the foot of the hills, is the nearest broad-gauge station, with trains from Delhi including the Shatabdi. From Kalka, take a taxi up (about 1.25 hours), or change to the Kalka–Shimla toy train and get off at Dharampur, about 13 km from Kasauli, then take a taxi. Chandigarh station, about 60 km away, has many more trains and plenty of taxis.

By bus

Buses run from Chandigarh, Delhi and Shimla to Dharampur and Garkhal, and some go on to Kasauli itself. HRTC and private operators serve the route; overnight buses from Delhi to Shimla can drop you at Dharampur. From there, local taxis cover the last stretch. Bus tickets for HRTC services can be booked online.

By air

Chandigarh airport, about 65 km away, is the closest and has frequent flights from across India. A taxi from the airport takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Shimla's small airport is further and has few flights. We meet flights at Chandigarh and Delhi.

Getting around Kasauli

Kasauli is small and best walked. Parts of the cantonment have vehicle restrictions and parking is limited, especially on weekends, so it's easiest to be dropped at your hotel and use a taxi only for trips to Monkey Point, Dagshai, Barog or Chail.

Which way is best for you?

Families and groups usually find a private taxi from Chandigarh or Delhi the easiest, with door-to-door service and stops on the way. Rail fans can take the train to Kalka and the toy train to Dharampur. Travellers flying in should land at Chandigarh and take a taxi. Budget travellers can use buses to Dharampur or Garkhal and a local taxi for the last stretch.

Kasauli Travel Guide: Getting There, Sights, Season and Stays

Kasauli is a small, quiet cantonment town in Himachal's Solan district, set on a ridge at about 1,800 m among pine and oak forest, just 58 km from Chandigarh. Founded by the British in 1842, it has kept its colonial calm: a stone church, a short Mall, old bungalows and long walks with views over the plains on one side and the hills on the other. It's the easiest hill escape from Chandigarh and a popular weekend from Delhi.

Dagshai, Sanawar and Barog: Day Trips Near Kasauli

Around Kasauli, the hills hide some of the oldest colonial settlements in Himachal. Dagshai is a hilltop cantonment with a 19th-century jail turned museum; Sanawar is home to one of India's oldest boarding schools; and Barog sits on the Kalka–Shimla railway beside its longest tunnel. All three make easy half-day trips from Kasauli. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

Kasauli Weather by Season, Snowfall and the Best Time to Visit

At about 1,800 m, Kasauli is lower and milder than Shimla, but it's still a proper hill town: cool summer nights, a misty monsoon and cold winters with the occasional dusting of snow. Because it's so close to Chandigarh, the contrast with the heat of the plains is what draws many visitors. This guide explains the seasons and the best time for each kind of trip. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.
