About Kaza for road travellers

Kaza is the main town of the Spiti valley, at about 3,650 m in a cold, high desert close to the Tibet frontier. It's the base for Spiti's monasteries and high villages: Key monastery on its hill about 12–15 km away, Kibber, Langza and Komic, and Hikkim, with what's often called the world's highest post office. Two roads lead in: the Kinnaur road from Shimla via Reckong Peo, Nako and Tabo, open most of the year, and the summer road from Manali over Kunzum La at about 4,550 m. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for the upper Kinnaur and Spiti stretch.
