Langza, Hikkim and Komic: Fossils, the Highest Post Office and High Villages

Above Kaza, a loop road climbs to three villages that sum up Spiti's high-altitude world. Langza has a giant Buddha statue and slopes full of marine fossils; Hikkim has a post office at about 4,400 m, recorded as one of the highest in the world; and Komic, home to the Tangyud monastery, is among the highest villages you can reach by road. All three fit into a half day from Kaza. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Langza

Langza is a small village of whitewashed houses in a wide bowl of grassland, overlooked by a large, colourful Buddha statue facing the valley. The slopes around it are famous for fossils of ammonites and other sea creatures, from the time, millions of years ago, when the region lay beneath the Tethys sea. Look, but leave fossils where they are: removing them is discouraged and they belong to the landscape. The peak of Chau Chau Kang Nilda rises behind the village.

Hikkim

Hikkim's post office, at about 4,400 m, is recorded in the Limca Book of Records and widely described as one of the highest post offices in the world. Visitors queue to send postcards home, which take a while to arrive but carry the Hikkim postmark. The post office keeps limited hours and can be closed on Sundays and holidays or in heavy snow, so go on a weekday.

Komic

Komic is a tiny village of a dozen or so houses beside the Tangyud monastery, a Sakya school gompa with fortress-like walls. It's often called one of the highest villages in the world connected by road; the exact height and ranking vary by source. The views over the surrounding peaks and valleys are vast, and the thin air is very noticeable.

Planning the loop

From Kaza, the road climbs to Hikkim and Komic, then on to Langza, and back down to Kaza, a loop that takes half a day with stops. Do it after at least one night in Kaza, not on your arrival day, as these villages are 700 to 900 m higher. Walk slowly, drink water, and turn back if anyone develops a bad headache or breathlessness.

Tips

  • Carry postcards and stamps money for Hikkim; it may have limited stock.
  • Wear sunscreen and sunglasses: UV is intense at this height.
  • Dress warmly: it's windy and cold even in summer.
  • Respect the monastery: remove shoes and ask before photos.
  • Homestays in Langza make a magical night for stargazing, once acclimatised.

Places to Visit in Spiti Valley: Monasteries, Villages and Lakes

Spiti is a high, cold desert on the Tibet frontier where the sights are spread across a huge, empty landscape: thousand-year-old monasteries on cliffs, villages above 4,000 m, fossil-strewn slopes and a turquoise lake. Kaza, the main town at about 3,650 m, is the base for most of them. This list covers the places most worth your time, grouped by direction from Kaza, with what to know about each. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Dhankar, Tabo and Pin Valley: Monasteries and Side Valleys of Lower Spiti

Downstream of Kaza, the Spiti river runs past some of the valley's most extraordinary places. Dhankar's monastery clings to eroded cliffs above the meeting of two rivers; Tabo has a monastery founded more than a thousand years ago, its ancient murals still glowing in the dark halls; and the Pin valley branches off into a green, wild national park. They lie on the road between Kinnaur and Kaza, so most visitors see them on the way in or out. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Spiti Itinerary: 7, 9 and 12-Day Plans from Delhi, Shimla or Manali

Spiti rewards slow travel. The roads are long and rough, Kaza is at about 3,650 m, and the safest trips climb gradually through Kinnaur before reaching the high valley. The classic route is the circuit: in from Shimla through Kinnaur, out over Kunzum pass to Manali. These plans show how to fit it into 7 to 12 days, plus a shorter summer option from Manali. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Spiti Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for a 7 to 12-Day Trip

Spiti is remote, so the biggest cost of a trip is transport: a car and driver for a week or more on hard mountain roads. Accommodation, mostly homestays and simple hotels, is reasonable, and food is inexpensive. This guide breaks down each part and gives rough figures. Prices change by season and year, so treat every number as indicative. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.
