Dhankar, Tabo and Pin Valley: Monasteries and Side Valleys of Lower Spiti

Downstream of Kaza, the Spiti river runs past some of the valley's most extraordinary places. Dhankar's monastery clings to eroded cliffs above the meeting of two rivers; Tabo has a monastery founded more than a thousand years ago, its ancient murals still glowing in the dark halls; and the Pin valley branches off into a green, wild national park. They lie on the road between Kinnaur and Kaza, so most visitors see them on the way in or out. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

At a glance

Distances are approximate road distances from Kaza; heights are approximate.

PlaceFrom KazaKnown for

Pin valley (Mudh)About 50 kmNational park, green fields, village homestays
TaboAbout 45–50 kmMonastery founded in 996 CE; murals; caves

Dhankar

Dhankar stands on a spur of fragile, wind-carved rock high above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. The old monastery and the ruins of a fort, once the seat of Spiti's local ruler, the Nono, look as if they're about to slide off the cliff; conservation work has been done to protect them, and a newer monastery stands nearby. A steep walk of about an hour leads up to Dhankar lake, a small high lake with views of the Manirang peaks. Take it slowly at this altitude.

Tabo

Tabo monastery was founded in 996 CE and is among the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist monasteries in the Himalaya. Its unassuming mud-brick halls hide remarkable murals and stucco sculptures from the early centuries, which is why it's sometimes called the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'. Light inside is dim, and photography is restricted in the old halls to protect the paintings. On the hillside above the village are meditation caves, with a newer monastery in the village too.

At about 3,280 m, Tabo is lower than Kaza, making it a good place to spend a first night when arriving from Kinnaur.

Pin valley

The Pin valley branches south from the Spiti river near Attargo, leading to green fields, poplar-lined villages and the Pin Valley National Park, a protected area for Himalayan wildlife including ibex and the snow leopard. The road ends at Mudh, a village with homestays and the start of the Pin–Bhaba and Pin–Parvati treks. It's a peaceful detour of half a day or an overnight.

Planning

Coming from Kinnaur: Nako to Tabo, overnight; next day Tabo to Dhankar and on to Kaza, with a detour into Pin if there's time. Coming from Kaza: a full-day round trip to Dhankar and Tabo, or include Pin and stay a night at Mudh. Your driver will advise on road conditions; the stretch near the confluence is prone to rockfall.

Tips

  • Visit Tabo in the morning when the monastery is open and calm.
  • Respect photography rules inside the old halls.
  • Carry water and snacks: shops are few.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for the Dhankar lake walk.
  • In winter, Tabo and Dhankar are reachable via Kinnaur, but very cold.

Places to Visit in Spiti Valley: Monasteries, Villages and Lakes

Spiti is a high, cold desert on the Tibet frontier where the sights are spread across a huge, empty landscape: thousand-year-old monasteries on cliffs, villages above 4,000 m, fossil-strewn slopes and a turquoise lake. Kaza, the main town at about 3,650 m, is the base for most of them. This list covers the places most worth your time, grouped by direction from Kaza, with what to know about each. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Langza, Hikkim and Komic: Fossils, the Highest Post Office and High Villages

Above Kaza, a loop road climbs to three villages that sum up Spiti's high-altitude world. Langza has a giant Buddha statue and slopes full of marine fossils; Hikkim has a post office at about 4,400 m, recorded as one of the highest in the world; and Komic, home to the Tangyud monastery, is among the highest villages you can reach by road. All three fit into a half day from Kaza. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Spiti Itinerary: 7, 9 and 12-Day Plans from Delhi, Shimla or Manali

Spiti rewards slow travel. The roads are long and rough, Kaza is at about 3,650 m, and the safest trips climb gradually through Kinnaur before reaching the high valley. The classic route is the circuit: in from Shimla through Kinnaur, out over Kunzum pass to Manali. These plans show how to fit it into 7 to 12 days, plus a shorter summer option from Manali. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Spiti Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for a 7 to 12-Day Trip

Spiti is remote, so the biggest cost of a trip is transport: a car and driver for a week or more on hard mountain roads. Accommodation, mostly homestays and simple hotels, is reasonable, and food is inexpensive. This guide breaks down each part and gives rough figures. Prices change by season and year, so treat every number as indicative. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.
