Overview

Delhi to Kaza is roughly 720–740 km via Shimla and Kinnaur, usually three days by taxi with about 22 to 25 hours of driving: Delhi to Shimla or Narkanda, on to Kalpa, then through Nako and Tabo into the Spiti valley and Kaza at about 3,650 m. In summer, a route via Manali and Kunzum La is also possible, but the Kinnaur road is open most of the year and climbs gradually, which matters at Spiti's altitude. Spiti from Delhi is a proper road trip rather than a transfer, and one car and driver for the whole journey is the simplest way to do it. We pick you up anywhere in Delhi NCR.

Three days to Spiti

Spiti is far from Delhi, and rushing the drive is both tiring and risky at altitude. The usual plan is three days: Delhi to Shimla or Narkanda on day one, eight to ten hours mostly on the plains and the Shimla highway; Shimla to Kalpa on day two, seven to eight hours along the Sutlej; and Kalpa to Kaza on day three, about 208 km through Nako and Tabo. Each night is a little higher than the last, which is exactly what your body needs.

Splitting further, with a night in Sarahan or Sangla, makes it more relaxed still.

  • Day 1: Delhi to Shimla or Narkanda
  • Day 2: Shimla to Kalpa
  • Day 3: Kalpa to Kaza

Making it a Spiti circuit

Most Delhi travellers make Spiti a loop of nine to twelve days: in through Kinnaur, a few days based in Kaza for Key monastery, Kibber, Langza, Komic and Hikkim, then out over Kunzum La to Manali, with an optional night at Chandratal, and back to Delhi via Chandigarh. The loop is only possible when Kunzum is open, roughly June to mid-October; outside that, you return the way you came.

Permits, health and paperwork

Indian citizens need no permit; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for upper Kinnaur and Spiti. Kaza is at about 3,650 m, so take the first day easy, drink plenty of water, and talk to a doctor before the trip if you have heart or lung conditions. Carry ID, cash and some basic medicines; ATMs and pharmacies are limited outside Kaza.

Vehicles and what the fare covers

We send only SUVs, Innovas and Tempo Travellers to Spiti. The starting fare covers the distance at our per-km rate, with fuel, tolls and state taxes. Driver night allowances for each overnight stop are added and quoted upfront, along with any extra days in Spiti or the return journey.

Families and older travellers

Spiti is a rewarding trip for families, but plan it gently. Choose an Innova Crysta or a Tempo Traveller for space, keep each day's drive to about eight hours, and add a rest day in Kalpa or Tabo before Kaza. Children and older travellers are more prone to altitude sickness, so watch for headaches, vomiting or unusual tiredness, and be ready to stay lower for an extra night. Kaza has a hospital, but specialist care is days away, so talk to your doctor before booking if anyone has heart, lung or blood-pressure problems.
