Manali to Kaza Road via Kunzum Pass: Route, Opening Dates and Conditions

The road from Manali to Kaza is one of the great mountain drives of India: through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, up the wild Chandra valley, over Kunzum pass at about 4,590 m and down into Spiti. It's also one of the roughest, open only for a few months a year, with water crossings, broken stretches and fast-changing weather. Here's what to expect and how to plan it. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

When the road is open

The road over Kunzum pass usually opens in late May or June, once the Border Roads Organisation has cleared the snow, and stays open until the first heavy snow, typically in mid or late October. Opening and closing dates vary every year and are announced by the district administration, so check the current status before planning. Outside this window, the only road into Spiti is through Kinnaur from Shimla.

Road conditions

The worst section is between Gramphu and Batal, where the road is often just a track of boulders and loose stones along the river, crossed by glacial streams. These streams are lowest in the early morning and can rise dangerously in the afternoon as snow melts, so drivers aim to cross early. Landslides, rockfall and fresh snow on Kunzum can close the road for hours or days at any time in the season.

An SUV with good ground clearance and a driver experienced on this road are strongly recommended. Many rental cars and outside taxis aren't allowed, or aren't suited, to this route.

Stops on the way

  • The Atal Tunnel and Sissu, just after it.
  • Chhatru and Batal: tiny dhabas offering tea, Maggi and rajma rice; famous among travellers.
  • Chandratal: a detour of about 14–15 km from Batal to the lake, with summer camps.
  • Kunzum pass: a small temple to the goddess Kunzum Devi and prayer flags; drivers traditionally circle the shrine.
  • Losar: the first village in Spiti, with homestays.

Altitude

This route climbs from Manali at about 2,050 m to over 4,500 m in a single day, which is a big jump. If you're coming from the plains, spend a night or two in Manali first, consider an overnight at Chandratal or Losar only if you feel well, and take a rest day in Kaza. Our altitude sickness guide explains symptoms and when to descend.

Tips

  • Leave Manali very early, by 5 or 6 am.
  • Carry warm clothes, water, snacks and cash; there's no ATM or fuel between Manali and Kaza.
  • Expect no mobile network for long stretches.
  • Keep a spare day in your plans for closures.
  • Book a Spiti-experienced driver and an SUV.

Chandratal Lake Guide: How to Reach, Best Time and Camping

Chandratal, the 'moon lake', is a crescent of turquoise water at about 4,300 m in the high country between Lahaul and Spiti, ringed by bare mountains and meadows. It's one of the most beautiful places you can reach by road in the Himalaya, but only for a few months each summer, and its altitude demands respect. Here's how to get there, when to go and how to stay safely. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Where to Stay in Spiti: Kaza, Village Homestays, Tabo and Chandratal Camps

Accommodation in Spiti is simple but often memorable: family homestays in mud-brick village houses, small hotels in Kaza, and tented camps near Chandratal in summer. Where you sleep also affects how you acclimatise, since some villages are several hundred metres higher than Kaza. This guide compares the main places to stay. We don't sell rooms on their own, so it's a neutral guide to areas, not properties. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Key Monastery, Kibber and Chicham Bridge: A Day North of Kaza

The road north of Kaza climbs past Spiti's most famous monastery to some of its highest villages. Key monastery stands like a fortress on a hill above the river, Kibber sits high on a plateau at the edge of a wildlife sanctuary, and Chicham bridge spans a dizzying gorge between Kibber and Chicham. Together they make one of the best days in Spiti. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Spiti Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for a 7 to 12-Day Trip

Spiti is remote, so the biggest cost of a trip is transport: a car and driver for a week or more on hard mountain roads. Accommodation, mostly homestays and simple hotels, is reasonable, and food is inexpensive. This guide breaks down each part and gives rough figures. Prices change by season and year, so treat every number as indicative. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.
