Spiti Weather by Month and the Best Time to Visit

Spiti is a cold desert in the rain shadow of the Himalaya: very dry, sunny, and cold for most of the year. It gets only around 50 mm of rain a year, so the monsoon that soaks the rest of north India barely touches it, but winters are fierce, with temperatures down to around −25°C. The season that matters most is when the roads are open. This guide explains the months, the roads and the best time for each kind of trip. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Spiti's climate in brief

Spiti's valley floor lies at roughly 2,950 to 4,100 m, and Kaza is at about 3,650 m. Summer days are warm in the sun, around 15°C to 25°C, but nights are cold even in July. In winter, temperatures regularly fall far below freezing, with extremes around −25°C. The air is thin and very dry, and the sun is strong at any time of year.

When the roads open

The road from Shimla through Kinnaur is open for most of the year, but snow and landslides can close it for days. The road from Manali, through the Atal Tunnel and over Kunzum pass at about 4,590 m, usually opens in late May or June once snow is cleared, and closes with the first heavy snow in mid or late October. Dates vary every year, so check before you plan a Manali–Spiti route.

Spiti month by month

  • January and February: deep winter. Very cold, snowy, frozen rivers; only for well-prepared winter trips via Kinnaur.
  • March and April: still cold, snow melting at lower villages; Kunzum closed.
  • May: warming, Kinnaur road reliable; Kunzum may open late in the month.
  • June: main season begins; both routes usually open; Chandratal accessible from mid-June.
  • July: warm and dry in Spiti, while the approach roads see monsoon landslides.
  • August: the busiest month; green fields in the villages.
  • September: clear skies, harvest, fewer people. One of the best months.
  • October: crisp and golden, very cold nights; Kunzum and Chandratal close.
  • November and December: winter returns; snow and sub-zero days.

Best time to visit Spiti, by trip type

  • For the full circuit (Shimla in, Manali out): late June to September.
  • For clear skies and fewer people: September.
  • For Chandratal: mid-June to late September.
  • For snow and snow leopards: January to March, via Kinnaur only, with an experienced operator.
  • For a gentler first visit: June or September, when it's neither crowded nor freezing.

Is there snow in Spiti?

In winter, yes: Spiti is usually under snow from about December to March. In summer, snow remains on the high peaks and on Kunzum pass into June, and fresh snow can fall on the passes in any month. The villages themselves are typically snow-free from May to October.

What to pack

Even in summer, pack warm layers, a down jacket, a hat and gloves for evenings. Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm are essential at this altitude. In winter, you'll need serious cold-weather gear. Our Spiti packing advice is in the altitude guide.

Chandratal, the 'moon lake', is a crescent of turquoise water at about 4,300 m in the high country between Lahaul and Spiti, ringed by bare mountains and meadows. It's one of the most beautiful places you can reach by road in the Himalaya, but only for a few months each summer, and its altitude demands respect. Here's how to get there, when to go and how to stay safely. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.

Spiti Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for a 7 to 12-Day Trip

Spiti is remote, so the biggest cost of a trip is transport: a car and driver for a week or more on hard mountain roads. Accommodation, mostly homestays and simple hotels, is reasonable, and food is inexpensive. This guide breaks down each part and gives rough figures. Prices change by season and year, so treat every number as indicative. It's part of our Spiti travel guide.
