Overview
Chandigarh to Chail is roughly 98–110 km, usually 3 to 3½ hours by taxi up the NH5 through Parwanoo and Solan to Kandaghat, then about 29 km along the quiet Chail road past the riverside stop at Sadhupul. Chail, at about 2,250 m, was the summer retreat of the Maharajas of Patiala, and it's much quieter than Shimla, with deodar forest, the old Chail Palace and what's often described as the world's highest cricket ground. It makes an easy weekend escape from the Tricity, or a peaceful first stop before Shimla. We pick you up anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula, or at the airport or station.

Things to do in Chail
Chail is a place to slow down. The Chail Palace, built by the Maharaja of Patiala, is now a heritage hotel with gardens open to visitors. The cricket ground, at about 2,444 m and belonging to the Chail Military School, is often called the world's highest. The Kali Ka Tibba temple stands on a hilltop with views across the valleys, and the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary's forests are good for walks.

Chail or Shimla for a weekend?
Shimla is bigger, busier and has more to do, but weekend traffic and crowds can be heavy. Chail is about the same distance from Chandigarh, much quieter, and better for a relaxed couple of days in the forest. Many families do both: Chail for a night, then on to Shimla, about 45 km via Kufri. With one car, the driver takes you through the whole trip.
Day trip from Chandigarh
A day trip to Chail is possible but long: about six to seven hours of driving round trip, leaving three or four hours in Chail. Leave Chandigarh by 7 am, stop at Sadhupul on the way up, and head back by 3 pm to avoid driving the hill road after dark. An overnight stay is more relaxing and lets you see the sunset from Kali Ka Tibba.
Where to stay
The Chail Palace, run by HPTDC, is the best-known stay, with rooms in the old palace and cottages in the grounds. There are also a few private hotels and homestays around the village and on the road from Sadhupul. Book ahead for weekends and holidays, when Tricity families fill the town.
Sadhupul: the stop everyone makes
About 10 km before Chail, the road crosses the Ashwani river at Sadhupul, where a row of small cafés and dhabas set their plastic tables and chairs right in the shallow stream. On a summer afternoon, it's a favourite with families: order tea and pakoras and sit with your feet in the cool water. In the monsoon, the river rises and the tables are pulled back, so it's mainly a dry-season pleasure.
It makes a natural half-hour break on the way up or down. The driver knows the spots with easy parking.
