Kasauli Itinerary and Budget: One Day, a Weekend or Longer

Kasauli is small, so it rewards a slow pace rather than a packed schedule. One full day covers the main sights; a weekend lets you add the forest trails and a nearby cantonment; three days leaves room for the toy train or Chail. These plans start from Chandigarh, about 1.5 to 2 hours away; from Delhi, add about 6 to 7 hours of driving. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

Kasauli in one day (from Chandigarh)

  • Leave Chandigarh by 7 or 8 am to beat the traffic at Parwanoo.
  • Morning: Monkey Point while it's open and clear (carry ID).
  • Midday: Christ Church and lunch on the Mall.
  • Afternoon: the Gilbert Trail walk.
  • Evening: Sunset Point, then drive back down, arriving in Chandigarh by about 9 pm.

Kasauli for a weekend

  • Day 1: arrive by midday, settle in, walk the Mall and Lower Mall, Christ Church, and Sunset Point.
  • Day 2: Monkey Point in the morning, the Gilbert Trail, then Dagshai's jail museum in the afternoon, or a slow café afternoon. Drive back in the evening, or stay a second night.

Kasauli in three days

Our Kasauli weekend and Kasauli–Chail packages follow these plans with hotels.

  • Days 1 and 2: as above.
  • Day 3: choose the toy train from Dharampur to Barog or Shimla, with your taxi meeting you; or a drive to Chail for the palace and the high cricket ground before heading back via Kandaghat.

A rough budget

All figures are indicative and change with the season, especially at weekends. Transport is the main fixed cost: a taxi from Chandigarh is priced per vehicle, so sharing makes it cheap per person; our Chandigarh to Kasauli page shows current fares. Hotels range from budget rooms on the highway to expensive heritage stays and resorts, and weekend rates are often much higher than weekdays. Food is moderate, with cafés and simple restaurants on the Mall.

For a couple driving up from Chandigarh for one night in a mid-range stay, a total in the region of ₹8,000–15,000 is a reasonable starting estimate, more at peak weekends or in a resort.

Tips for planning

  • Go on weekdays if you can: weekends are crowded and expensive.
  • Carry photo ID for Monkey Point, and expect to deposit phones and cameras.
  • Start early to beat traffic on the Parwanoo climb.
  • Combine with Shimla or Chail on a longer trip.
  • Check the Mall's weekly market closing day before planning a shopping afternoon.

Kasauli with Shimla, Chail or Manali

Kasauli is a natural first or last stop on a longer Himachal trip. Heading to Shimla, stop a night in Kasauli on the way up; heading home, stop on the way down. For couples, a loop of Kasauli and Chail makes a quiet four-day break. Kasauli also works as a gentle first night before the long drive on to Manali, about 300 km away.

Dagshai, Sanawar and Barog: Day Trips Near Kasauli

Around Kasauli, the hills hide some of the oldest colonial settlements in Himachal. Dagshai is a hilltop cantonment with a 19th-century jail turned museum; Sanawar is home to one of India's oldest boarding schools; and Barog sits on the Kalka–Shimla railway beside its longest tunnel. All three make easy half-day trips from Kasauli. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

Kasauli Travel Guide: Getting There, Sights, Season and Stays

Kasauli is a small, quiet cantonment town in Himachal's Solan district, set on a ridge at about 1,800 m among pine and oak forest, just 58 km from Chandigarh. Founded by the British in 1842, it has kept its colonial calm: a stone church, a short Mall, old bungalows and long walks with views over the plains on one side and the hills on the other. It's the easiest hill escape from Chandigarh and a popular weekend from Delhi.

Where to Stay in Kasauli: Town, Garkhal, Dharampur or Dagshai?

Kasauli itself is tiny, and much of it is cantonment land, so most accommodation is either in a handful of heritage bungalows and boutique stays in town, or in resorts and villas spread along the roads below. Where you stay decides whether you can walk to the Mall or need a car for everything. This guide compares the main areas. We don't sell hotel rooms on their own, so it's a neutral guide to areas, not properties. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

Kasauli Weather by Season, Snowfall and the Best Time to Visit

At about 1,800 m, Kasauli is lower and milder than Shimla, but it's still a proper hill town: cool summer nights, a misty monsoon and cold winters with the occasional dusting of snow. Because it's so close to Chandigarh, the contrast with the heat of the plains is what draws many visitors. This guide explains the seasons and the best time for each kind of trip. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.
