Where to Stay in Kasauli: Town, Garkhal, Dharampur or Dagshai?

Kasauli itself is tiny, and much of it is cantonment land, so most accommodation is either in a handful of heritage bungalows and boutique stays in town, or in resorts and villas spread along the roads below. Where you stay decides whether you can walk to the Mall or need a car for everything. This guide compares the main areas. We don't sell hotel rooms on their own, so it's a neutral guide to areas, not properties. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

In Kasauli town

Staying in town puts you within walking distance of Christ Church, the Mall and the Gilbert Trail, and gives you quiet evenings among the pines. Choice is limited: a few heritage hotels, guesthouses and boutique stays, which fill quickly at weekends. Vehicle restrictions in parts of the cantonment mean your driver may drop you a short walk from some properties.

Garkhal, Dharampur and the roads below

Most of Kasauli's resorts and larger hotels are along the approach roads, around Garkhal and down towards Dharampur. They offer space, pools at some properties, valley views and parking, and suit families and groups arriving by car. Kasauli town is 10 to 30 minutes away. Dharampur, on the highway, is handy for the toy train and onward travel to Shimla.

Dagshai and Barog

For a quieter stay in the forest, Dagshai and Barog, each 20 to 25 km away, have resorts and camps with views of the hills. They make a good base if you're combining Kasauli with Solan, Chail or the toy train.

What to check before booking

  • Car access and parking, especially for town properties.
  • The walk to the Mall, if you want to explore on foot.
  • Heating in winter, as nights drop below freezing.
  • Weekend minimum stays and prices, often much higher than weekdays.
  • Recent reviews for villas and homestays, as quality varies.

Booking tips for weekends

Kasauli fills up fast on Friday and Saturday nights, on long weekends and over Christmas and New Year, and rates can double. If you can, travel midweek, when you'll find better prices and much quieter walks. Book stays with clear directions and parking information, and confirm whether your driver can reach the door, especially for town properties in the cantonment.

Kasauli Itinerary and Budget: One Day, a Weekend or Longer

Kasauli is small, so it rewards a slow pace rather than a packed schedule. One full day covers the main sights; a weekend lets you add the forest trails and a nearby cantonment; three days leaves room for the toy train or Chail. These plans start from Chandigarh, about 1.5 to 2 hours away; from Delhi, add about 6 to 7 hours of driving. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

Kasauli Travel Guide: Getting There, Sights, Season and Stays

Kasauli is a small, quiet cantonment town in Himachal's Solan district, set on a ridge at about 1,800 m among pine and oak forest, just 58 km from Chandigarh. Founded by the British in 1842, it has kept its colonial calm: a stone church, a short Mall, old bungalows and long walks with views over the plains on one side and the hills on the other. It's the easiest hill escape from Chandigarh and a popular weekend from Delhi.

Places to Visit in Kasauli: Sights, Walks and Things to Do

Kasauli is a place to walk rather than tick off sights: most of what's worth seeing lies along a few kilometres of quiet roads and forest trails on its ridge. This guide covers the main places to visit in and around town, how long each takes, and the access rules to know before you go. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.

Dagshai, Sanawar and Barog: Day Trips Near Kasauli

Around Kasauli, the hills hide some of the oldest colonial settlements in Himachal. Dagshai is a hilltop cantonment with a 19th-century jail turned museum; Sanawar is home to one of India's oldest boarding schools; and Barog sits on the Kalka–Shimla railway beside its longest tunnel. All three make easy half-day trips from Kasauli. It's part of our Kasauli travel guide.
