Overview
Two small, unhurried hill towns within three hours of Chandigarh. Kasauli is a cantonment town of old churches, cobbled lanes and sunset views over the plains; Chail is a forest retreat built by the Maharaja of Patiala, with a palace hotel and walks through deodar woods. This four-day plan gives you a night in Kasauli and two in Chail, with no drive longer than three hours, so the trip feels like a holiday from the first afternoon. It suits couples who'd rather read on a balcony than queue at a snow point.
Best for: Couples with a long weekend who want quiet hills without long drives
- Kasauli's Mall, Christ Church and Sunset Point
- Two nights in the forests of Chail
- The Chail palace and its hilltop cricket ground
- Sidh Baba temple and the Chail wildlife sanctuary
- No drive longer than three hours
- Easy to reach from Delhi by train
Day by day
- Day1
Chandigarh to Kasauli
About 60 kmOvernight: Kasauli
A short drive of about two hours up the Kalka road and through the pine forest to Kasauli. Afternoon walk along the Upper Mall and Lower Mall past Christ Church, built in the 1840s, and sunset from Sunset Point or the Manki Point area if open to visitors.
Road guide: Chandigarh to Kasauli → - Day2
Kasauli to Chail
About 75 kmOvernight: Chail
Morning in Kasauli, perhaps the Baptist church and the old bakeries, then on via Dharampur and Kandaghat to Chail. Spend the late afternoon in the palace grounds and the forest around it.
- Day3
A day in Chail
Local sightseeing, short drivesOvernight: Chail
Walk up to the Sidh Baba ka Mandir and through the Chail wildlife sanctuary's oak and deodar forest, and see the cricket ground cut into a hilltop at about 2,400 m. The afternoon is free; many couples spend it on the palace lawns.
- Day4
Chail to Chandigarh
About 105 km
A relaxed breakfast and the drive down through Kandaghat and Solan to Chandigarh, about three hours. Your driver helps with luggage at the station or airport, and if your train or flight leaves late we can add a lunch stop or a short detour on the way.
Two quiet hill towns
Kasauli sits at about 1,900 m on a ridge above the plains, and its lanes have barely changed since the nineteenth century. The writer Khushwant Singh spent his summers there, and the town's literary festival is still held each year.
Chail, at about 2,250 m, was laid out as a summer retreat by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. The palace, now a heritage hotel, sits among forests that are protected as a wildlife sanctuary.
The plan in short
The trip uses three short drives and leaves plenty of free time. It's a good honeymoon for couples coming from Delhi or Punjab who don't want to spend their first days married in a car.
- Day 1: Chandigarh to Kasauli, 2 hours
- Day 2: Kasauli to Chail, 2.5 hours
- Day 4: Chail to Chandigarh, 3 hours
Where to eat
Kasauli's Mall Road has small bakeries and cafés, and the club and old hotels serve traditional meals. In Chail, most couples eat at their hotel; the palace dining room is worth booking for a dinner even if you stay elsewhere.
Who this suits
This is the gentlest honeymoon we plan: short drives, quiet hotels and forest walks. It suits couples coming from Delhi, Chandigarh or Punjab who want to switch off quickly, and anyone who has already done Shimla and Manali and wants something calmer. It doesn't include snow points or adventure sports; if you want those, our Manali honeymoon package is the better fit.
In spring and autumn the light is soft and the air clear, and both towns are at their best for long walks and evenings outdoors.
