Chandigarh to Shimla
About 115 kmOvernight: Shimla
A gentle start: three to four hours up through Solan, arriving for a late lunch. In the evening, walk the Ridge and the Mall together and stop at one of Shimla's old cafés for coffee as the lights come on across the valley.

A day in the forests around Shimla: Kufri's viewpoints, the quiet road through deodar woods to Chail and its palace, and orchard villages around Mashobra on the way back. Dinner in Shimla.

Shimla to Manali

Down to the Sutlej and across to Mandi, then up the Beas valley to Manali. Stop where you like: the river at Pandoh, a shawl shop near Kullu, or a riverside café. Arrive by evening.

Solang valley
About 30 kmOvernight: Manali
Up to Solang for the ropeway and, if the weather is right, a tandem paragliding flight together. In winter it's the best place near Manali for snow play. Afternoon at the hotel or in the Vashisht hot baths.

Atal Tunnel and Sissu
About 90 kmOvernight: Manali
Through the 9 km tunnel into Lahaul, where Sissu's waterfall and wide river plain sit under high, bare peaks. It's a different landscape from green Manali, and often snowier. Back for dinner.

Naggar and Old Manali
About 50 kmOvernight: Manali
Naggar castle, the Roerich gallery and a long lunch with a view of the valley, then back to Manali for an evening walk up through Old Manali's lanes.

The drive home down the valley, about seven to nine hours, with lunch on the way and drop-off at Chandigarh airport, station or hotel.

A week paced for two
Only two days involve long drives; the others are short trips with time to stop for photos, tea or a walk. Two nights in Shimla let you see it without rushing, and four in Manali give you a spare day if the weather closes Solang or the tunnel.
We recommend the comfort tier for honeymoons. It's mainly about the room: views, space and quiet.
Shimla or Manali: what each adds
Shimla is about history and walks: the Mall, the church, the old cafés and the forest roads around Chail. Manali is about mountains and snow: Solang, the tunnel, Lahaul and the old villages under the peaks. Together they make the classic first Himalayan holiday.

Photos and quiet spots
For photos without crowds, try the Ridge early in the morning, the forest road to Chail, the meadows above Solang before 10 am, and the lanes between Old Manali and the Manu temple. Your driver knows the viewpoints along the Beas where you can stop safely.
