Overview

Manali to Sissu is about 41 km by road, usually 1½ to 2 hours by taxi, with the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel doing most of the work. The tunnel's south portal is about 25 km from Manali; you drive under the Pir Panjal range and come out in Lahaul, a few kilometres from Sissu at about 3,100 m. Since the tunnel opened in October 2020, Sissu has become the easiest high-altitude snow point from Manali, without the Rohtang permit queue. The village is known for its waterfall, apple orchards and views up the Chandra valley. We pick you up in Manali, wait in Sissu, and bring you back the same day.

About the Atal Tunnel

The Atal Tunnel was inaugurated on 3 October 2020. At 9.02 km it's one of the world's longest highway tunnels above 3,000 m, running under the Rohtang range between a south portal at about 3,060 m and a north portal near Sissu at about 3,071 m. It cut the drive from Manali to Lahaul by hours and keeps the valley connected for much of the winter.

For visitors, the tunnel means a high-mountain day trip in under two hours each way. It's a busy road in season, so expect queues at the portals at peak times, and follow traffic police instructions on the Lahaul side, where parking is controlled.

  • No stopping inside the tunnel.
  • Carry warm clothes even in summer.
  • Keep ID handy for any checks.

What to do in Sissu

Sissu is a small village rather than a resort. The main draw is the waterfall above the village and the wide views of the Chandra valley. In winter, the snowfields near the north portal are the main play area. In summer, there's a lake area near the river, walks through fields and orchards, and quiet cafés and homestays for a night away from Manali.

If you have more time, the road continues to Keylong, the district headquarters of Lahaul, and onward towards the high passes; that's a longer trip best planned separately.

Sissu in winter and in summer

In winter, Sissu is a snowfield. The waterfall freezes or disappears under snow, the fields and roofs are white, and the area near the tunnel's north portal becomes the main play area for visitors from Manali. Days are short and cold, and the road can close after heavy snow, so keep the plan flexible and start early.

From spring to autumn, Sissu turns green, with the waterfall in full flow and the Chandra river running fast below the village. It's the time for walks, photographs and a quiet lunch at a café or homestay. On clear days you can see the high peaks of the Pir Panjal and the Lahaul ranges.

Useful guides for this trip

Adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle Trip

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is India's classic first trip, and the Himalayan foothills of Himachal are the perfect contrast to it: cool air, pine forest and mountain towns after the heat and crowds of the plains. The question is how to connect them without wasting days. Here's how the pieces fit, with honest drive times.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.

Permits Foreigners Need in Himachal: Kinnaur and Spiti

Most of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kasol and Dalhousie, needs no special permit for foreign visitors beyond a valid Indian visa. The exception is the border country of upper Kinnaur and Spiti, close to the Tibet frontier, where foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Indian citizens don't. This guide explains where the permit applies, how travellers report getting it, and how to plan a Spiti road trip around it.

Rohtang Pass Permit for Taxis: How It Works from Manali

Rohtang Pass is one of the most-requested day trips from Manali, and also one of the most confusing to book. Vehicles need a permit, permits are limited each day, and the rules have shifted over the years. Here's how it works for a taxi trip, what we can and can't promise, and the alternatives that need no permit at all.
