Overview

Dalhousie is Himachal's most peaceful hill station: five hills of deodar and oak, old churches and long level walks built by the British in the 1850s. This honeymoon package gives you three nights there and one at Khajjiar, the meadow ringed by forest that's often called India's mini Switzerland. A day trip to Chamba adds the stone temples of the Lakshmi Narayan complex and the Chamba Rumal embroidery. Pathankot, the start and end point, has trains from Delhi and a small airport, and the drive up takes about two and a half hours.

Best for: Couples who want quiet forests and colonial charm rather than Manali's crowds

  • Three nights in Dalhousie, one at Khajjiar
  • Khajjiar's meadow and lake at dawn and dusk
  • Chamba's Lakshmi Narayan temples
  • Panchpula and Satdhara waterfalls
  • Level forest walks on Garam and Thandi Sadak
  • Short drives throughout

Why Dalhousie for a honeymoon

Dalhousie has none of the traffic jams of Shimla or Manali. Its main roads are almost level, so you can walk for hours under deodars with views across the valleys. The town was founded in 1854 and named after the Governor-General, Lord Dalhousie, and its churches and old bungalows give it a gentle, old-fashioned feel.

Khajjiar's meadow

Khajjiar sits at about 1,950 m, a saucer-shaped meadow with a small lake in the middle and a temple to the serpent god Khajji Nag. A Swiss diplomat is said to have compared it with Switzerland in 1992, and the nickname stuck. Morning and evening, when the day-trippers have gone, it's one of the most peaceful places in Himachal.

Chamba's temples and crafts

Chamba town, on the banks of the Ravi, was the capital of one of the oldest princely states in the Himalaya. Its Lakshmi Narayan temples date back to around the tenth century, and the town is known for Chamba Rumal, a fine double-sided embroidery, and for leather chappals. The Bhuri Singh museum holds Pahari miniature paintings.

Getting to Pathankot

Pathankot is the railhead for Dalhousie and Chamba. Overnight and day trains run from Delhi, and the town has a small airport with limited flights; Amritsar airport, about 110 km away, has many more. If you arrive at Amritsar, we can collect you there for a small extra charge and add a stop at the Golden Temple on the way out if you like.

The drive from Pathankot to Dalhousie climbs from the plains through Nurpur and Banikhet in about two and a half to three hours. It's a pretty road, with the first views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges appearing as you near the top.
