Overview
Dalhousie to Khajjiar is about 21–24 km, roughly an hour by taxi through the deodar forest of the Kalatop–Khajjiar sanctuary. Khajjiar, at about 1,920 m, is a wide green meadow ringed by forest, with a small lake and the old wooden Khajji Nag temple at its edge. In 1992 a Swiss envoy dubbed it India's 'mini Switzerland', and the name has stuck. Almost everyone who stays in Dalhousie visits, usually as a half-day trip, sometimes combined with Kalatop or a longer day to Chamba. We pick you up from your Dalhousie hotel, wait at Khajjiar, and bring you back.

Driving tips for this route
- 1Leave by 9–10 am in peak season; parking near the meadow fills by midday on weekends.
- 2The road is narrow in the forest; larger vehicles move slowly at the bends.
- 3Horse rides, zorbing and other activities at the meadow are paid directly to operators.
- 4In winter, snow can close the road for a while after heavy falls; we check before leaving.
- 5Add Chamba for a full-day loop if you'd like temples and a riverside town.

What to do at Khajjiar
Most of the pleasure is the meadow itself: walking around it, sitting under the deodars, and watching the light change on the forest. The Khajji Nag temple, a carved wooden shrine reported to be several centuries old, is at the edge. The small lake in the middle varies with the season.
There are horse rides, zorbing and paragliding operators in season; agree prices before starting. For a longer walk, there's a forest trail of about 11 km from Kalatop to Khajjiar through the sanctuary, which takes around three hours downhill. Ask us to drop you at Kalatop and meet you at Khajjiar if you'd like to walk it.
- Carry water and snacks; food stalls are basic.
- Wear comfortable shoes for the meadow and the forest paths.
- Keep to paths in the sanctuary area.
Khajjiar, Kalatop and Chamba in one day
With a full day, you can combine Khajjiar with Kalatop's forest and continue to Chamba, about 24 km beyond Khajjiar, for its stone temples and the Chaugan, a large green in the centre of town. It makes a satisfying loop and a good contrast between meadow, forest and an old river town. Book the car for the full day and we'll plan the order around the light and the crowds.
Visiting Khajjiar on the way in or out
You don't have to stay in Dalhousie to see Khajjiar. Arriving by train at Pathankot, about 80 km below Dalhousie, you can go straight to Khajjiar for the afternoon and reach your Dalhousie hotel by evening. Leaving the region, Khajjiar works as a last stop before the drive down to Pathankot, Amritsar or Dharamshala.
Some travellers prefer to stay at Khajjiar itself. There are a few hotels and cottages around the meadow, and the early morning and evening are far quieter than midday, when day-trippers arrive. If you stay, we can collect you from Khajjiar and continue to your next destination.
With a family group and luggage for the onward trip, an SUV or Innova Crysta keeps everyone in one car on the forest road. A sedan is fine for two to four people with light bags.
