Overview

Dalhousie to Delhi is roughly 550–570 km, usually 10 to 12 hours by taxi: about three hours down the hill road from Dalhousie to Pathankot, then the fast NH44 across Punjab and Haryana through Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala and Panipat into Delhi. It's one of the longest drives we run, so the start time matters most: leave Dalhousie at dawn and you're in Delhi by evening. Many families break the trip with a night in Amritsar, which adds the Golden Temple to the end of a Dalhousie and Khajjiar holiday. We pick you up from your Dalhousie or Khajjiar hotel and drop you anywhere in Delhi NCR, at the airport or at a station.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Dalhousie by 5–6 am to reach Delhi by early evening.
  • 2The first three hours, down to Pathankot, are the slowest; after that, the NH44 is fast four- and six-lane highway.
  • 3For an evening flight from Delhi, leave a buffer of three hours or more; traffic entering Delhi is unpredictable.
  • 4Winter fog on the NH44 (December–January) can slow the evening stretch near Delhi.
  • 5Starting from Khajjiar adds about an hour.

Breaking the journey in Amritsar

Amritsar is a small detour from Pathankot and splits the drive almost in half. Leave Dalhousie after breakfast, reach Amritsar by early afternoon, and see the Golden Temple in the evening light, with the Wagah border ceremony as an option if you arrive early. The next day, it's about seven to eight hours to Delhi on the NH44. For many families, it's the highlight of the trip home.

With the same car for both days, the driver stays in Amritsar overnight; you pay for the extra day, not for two separate trips.

Where in Delhi we can drop you

We drop anywhere in Delhi NCR: homes in Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad or Faridabad, hotels in central Delhi, all terminals at Delhi airport, and New Delhi, Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar stations. For an airport drop, give us your terminal and flight time, and we'll plan the pickup so you arrive with plenty of time for check-in.

Taxi, bus or train from Dalhousie

Overnight buses run from Dalhousie to Delhi, and trains leave from Pathankot, about 80 km below Dalhousie. A taxi makes sense for families and groups, for travellers with luggage, and for anyone who'd rather leave on their own schedule and stop where they like. We can also drop you at Pathankot station or Amritsar airport if you'd rather finish the trip by train or plane.

  • Pathankot station: about 3 hours from Dalhousie
  • Amritsar airport: about 4½–5½ hours
  • Delhi: about 10–12 hours

Comfort on a long day

A ten- to twelve-hour drive is tiring, especially for children and older passengers. Ask for an SUV or Innova Crysta for the extra space, plan proper breaks at Pathankot, Jalandhar and Murthal, and keep water, snacks and a warm layer within reach. The driver will suggest clean stops along the highway.

Leaving Dalhousie at dawn

An early start from Dalhousie means driving the first hour down to Banikhet in the half-light, when the road is quiet. Pack the night before, settle your hotel bill, and ask the hotel for a packed breakfast if the kitchen opens late; you'll be in Pathankot for a proper meal by about 8 am. In winter, the driver may wait until it's light if the road is icy. On the plains, the NH44 is straightforward, with good dhabas and clean stops every hour or so.

Weather & road conditions

March–June and September–November: easy driving at both ends.
July–August: monsoon rain on the Dalhousie–Pathankot road; leave early.
December–February: snow possible in Dalhousie and fog on the plains; build in extra time.

Pickup options

  • • Dalhousie hotels (Gandhi Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Mall Road)
  • • Banikhet and the Dalhousie bus stand
  • • Khajjiar (if you're staying there)

Other ways to travel

Overnight buses run from Dalhousie to Delhi. Trains run from Pathankot, about 80 km away, and flights leave from Amritsar and Kangra.
