Overview

Kullu to Delhi is roughly 490–510 km, usually 11 to 13 hours by taxi: down the Beas through Bhuntar, the Aut tunnel and the Pandoh gorge to Mandi, onto the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane past Bilaspur, and then the NH44 via Ambala into Delhi. It's the usual way home after a Kullu, Manali or Parvati valley holiday, and leaving from Kullu saves about an hour and a half compared with starting in Manali. With a dawn start, you're in Delhi by evening. We pick you up from your Kullu hotel, Bhuntar or the riverside stays along the highway, and drop you anywhere in Delhi NCR, at the airport or at a station.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Kullu by 5–6 am to reach Delhi by early evening.
  • 2The Pandoh–Aut gorge, just south of Kullu, is the slowest stretch; it's quieter early in the morning.
  • 3For an evening flight from Delhi, leave a buffer of three hours or more.
  • 4Monsoon slides between Kullu and Mandi can close the road for hours; keep a buffer day before international flights in July–August.
  • 5Winter fog near Delhi (December–January) can slow the last stretch.

Planning the trip home

The return from Kullu is long but predictable once you're past Mandi. The best plan is an early start, breakfast in Mandi and lunch near Bilaspur or Kiratpur, reaching Delhi in the early evening. With a flight or train the same evening, tell us the time when you book, and we'll suggest a pickup with enough buffer for the gorge and Delhi's traffic.

If you'd rather not do it in one go, a night in Chandigarh splits the drive into two easy halves.

Where in Delhi we can drop you

We drop anywhere in Delhi NCR: homes in Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad or Faridabad, hotels in central Delhi, all terminals at Delhi airport, and New Delhi, Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar stations. For an airport drop, give us your terminal and flight time, and we'll plan the pickup so you arrive with plenty of time for check-in.

Flying instead

Kullu–Manali airport at Bhuntar, about 10 km south of Kullu, has limited flights to Delhi that are often affected by weather, especially in winter. If you have a flight booked from Bhuntar, we can drop you there; if it's cancelled, the same car can drive you to Delhi or Chandigarh instead. It's worth booking flexible tickets in the winter months.

  • Bhuntar airport: about 10 km from Kullu
  • Chandigarh: about 6–7 hours
  • Delhi: about 11–13 hours

Taxi or Volvo bus

Overnight Volvo buses from Kullu to Delhi are cheaper per person. A taxi suits families, groups of four or more, travellers with heavy bags or a flight to catch, and anyone who wants to travel by day and see the valley. It also leaves on your schedule and can stop wherever you'd like along the way.

Ending a Parvati valley or Jibhi trip

Many travellers return to Delhi after a few days in Kasol, Manikaran, Jibhi or Tirthan rather than Kullu itself. We pick up from those places too: from Kasol, the route goes down to Bhuntar and joins this one; from Jibhi or Tirthan, it joins the highway at Aut. Either way, the timing is similar, and you won't need to come into Kullu town. Tell us where you're staying, and we'll set the pickup time to reach Delhi when you need.

Weather & road conditions

March–June and September–November: dry roads and easy driving.
July–August: monsoon slides on the Mandi–Kullu gorge; leave early and keep a buffer.
December–February: cold starts in Kullu and fog near Delhi.

Pickup options

  • • Kullu town hotels (Dhalpur, Akhara Bazaar, riverside)
  • • Bhuntar and Kullu–Manali airport
  • • Riverside stays between Kullu and Manali

Other ways to travel

Overnight Volvo buses run from Kullu to Delhi. There's no railway in the Kullu valley; Bhuntar airport has limited flights.

Can Foreigners Drive in India? Self-Drive vs Hiring a Driver
