Overview

Delhi to Bir is roughly 460–520 km depending on the start point, and realistically 11 to 13 hours by taxi via Chandigarh, Una and the Kangra valley. That's a very long day, so most travellers either leave Delhi before dawn or break the trip with a night in Dharamshala or Palampur. The payoff is arriving at India's best-known paragliding site with your own car for the take-off ridge at Billing and side trips to the monasteries. Flying to Kangra airport, about 68 km from Bir, is the quicker alternative when flight times work.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Start from Delhi by 4–5 am if you want to reach Bir the same day; otherwise plan an overnight in Palampur or Dharamshala.
  • 2Two drivers aren't needed if you split the trip, which is also safer than one 13-hour day.
  • 3Tell us early if you're carrying your own paragliding kit; it needs boot or roof space.

Bir Billing Paragliding Trip Guide: Season, Getting There and Planning

Bir Billing in the Kangra valley is India's best-known paragliding site. Pilots launch from Billing, a grassy ridge at about 2,400 m, and land in fields at Bir, roughly 1,100 m lower. Most visitors come for a tandem flight with a registered pilot, then stay on for the monasteries, cafés and walks. This guide covers when you can fly, how to plan around the weather, and the quickest ways to reach Bir by road or air.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle Trip

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is India's classic first trip, and the Himalayan foothills of Himachal are the perfect contrast to it: cool air, pine forest and mountain towns after the heat and crowds of the plains. The question is how to connect them without wasting days. Here's how the pieces fit, with honest drive times.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.
