Bir, then Manali

Bir and Manali make a natural pair on a Himachal trip: a few quiet days of paragliding, monasteries and cafés in Bir, then the bigger mountains and snow around Manali. The drive between them crosses the hills from the Kangra valley into the Beas valley, with Mandi's temples as a good midway stop. It's one of the easier long transfers in the state.

What to do in Manali

Manali is the base for the Solang valley, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu, and, with a permit, Rohtang Pass. In town, Hadimba temple sits in a cedar forest, Old Manali has the cafés and guesthouses, and Vashisht has hot springs. With a few days, you can also drive on to Kasol and the Parvati valley, about 75 km away.

  • Hadimba temple
  • Old Manali and Vashisht
  • Solang valley
  • Atal Tunnel and Sissu

Arriving in Manali

Manali's stays are spread across the Mall Road and Model Town, Old Manali and Vashisht. Old Manali and Vashisht lanes are narrow, and some guesthouses are a short walk from where cars stop. Share your stay's name and the driver will plan the nearest drop.

Travelling with paragliding gear

If you're carrying your own wing and harness, tell us when you book so we send a vehicle with enough boot space, usually an SUV or Innova. Pilots heading to Manali's flying site at Solang can ask the driver about local transport once they arrive.

Mandi: a stop worth making

Mandi sits about halfway between Bir and Manali, where the road from Joginder Nagar meets the Beas. It's one of Himachal's oldest towns, with stone temples along the river, including Bhutnath in the bazaar and Panchvaktra at the confluence, and a lively market around the old Seri Manch stage. An hour here for lunch and a walk breaks the drive nicely.

From Mandi, the road climbs through the Pandoh dam area and the long Aut tunnel into the Kullu valley. The gorge section can be slow with road work and traffic, so most drivers prefer to reach it by early afternoon. After Kullu, the valley opens out into orchards and riverside villages for the last hour to Manali.

If you have time, Rewalsar lake, about 25 km from Mandi and sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs, makes a fine detour for travellers interested in the Tibetan Buddhist sites they saw in Bir.

  • Bhutnath and Panchvaktra temples
  • Seri Manch market
  • Rewalsar lake detour (about 25 km)

The Himachal Backpacker Route: McLeod Ganj, Bir, Manali and Kasol

Most independent travellers in Himachal follow some version of the same loop: Tibetan McLeod Ganj, paragliding in Bir, the mountains around Manali, and the cafés and trails of Kasol in the Parvati valley. It's a natural circuit, because each place is a half-day or day's drive from the next. This guide sets out the usual order, drive times between each stop, and how to get around.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Altitude Sickness in Spiti, Ladakh and Lahaul: A Practical Guide

Spiti, Lahaul and Ladakh are some of the most spectacular places you can reach by road in India, and some of the highest. Kaza is at about 3,650 m, Leh at about 3,500 m, Chandratal at about 4,300 m, and the passes on the way are higher still. Altitude sickness is common on these trips, and the way you plan the drive makes a big difference. This guide covers the practical side; it isn't medical advice, so talk to a doctor before you travel, especially if you have health conditions.

Bir Billing Paragliding Trip Guide: Season, Getting There and Planning

Bir Billing in the Kangra valley is India's best-known paragliding site. Pilots launch from Billing, a grassy ridge at about 2,400 m, and land in fields at Bir, roughly 1,100 m lower. Most visitors come for a tandem flight with a registered pilot, then stay on for the monasteries, cafés and walks. This guide covers when you can fly, how to plan around the weather, and the quickest ways to reach Bir by road or air.
