Overview

Manali to Jispa is roughly 90 km, usually 2½ to 3 hours by taxi: through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, down the Chandra valley past Sissu to Tandi, then up the Bhaga river through Keylong to Jispa, about 20 km beyond, at roughly 3,200 m. Jispa is a small riverside village with camps and guesthouses, and it's the favourite first-night stop on the Manali–Leh highway because it's quieter and prettier than Keylong. It also makes a peaceful two- or three-day escape from Manali in its own right. We pick you up from your Manali hotel and drop you at your Jispa camp or guesthouse.

Why stop in Jispa

Jispa sits in a wide part of the Bhaga valley with the river running past, willow trees, and mountains close on every side. There's little to do except walk, sit by the water and watch the stars, which is exactly why travellers like it. For the Leh drive, it's the best first night: about 20 km further along than Keylong, so the second day is a little shorter, at a similar altitude that helps you adjust.

Jispa or Keylong?

Keylong is the bigger town, with more hotels, shops, a hospital and ATMs. Jispa is a village with camps and a handful of guesthouses, quieter and more scenic. For one night on the way to Leh, Jispa is usually the better choice; for a few days exploring Lahaul's monasteries, Keylong is more convenient. They're only about half an hour apart.

  • Jispa: quieter, riverside camps
  • Keylong: more hotels and services
  • About 20 km apart

Going on to Leh

From Jispa, the Manali–Leh highway climbs past Darcha and Zingzingbar to Baralacha La, then crosses the Sarchu plains, the Gata loops and the high passes of Nakee La, Lachulung La and Tanglang La to Leh. It's a long day of eight to ten hours. Outside taxis can drop you in Leh but can't do local sightseeing in Ladakh, so plan a Leh taxi for Nubra and Pangong.

Altitude

Jispa is at roughly 3,200 m, nearly 1,200 m higher than Manali, and you get there in under three hours. Most people feel fine, but some get headaches or poor sleep on the first night. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy exertion on arrival, and tell the driver if anyone feels unwell. If you're going on to Leh, this night is an important part of adjusting.

Things to do around Jispa

Jispa is a place to slow down. Walk along the Bhaga river, visit the small monastery and the village, and drive or walk up to Darcha, about 7 km on, where the road to the Shinku La and Zanskar branches off. Keylong's monasteries, Kardang and Shashur, are about half an hour back down the valley. At night, the sky is clear and dark, which makes Jispa a good place for stargazing in summer.
