Overview
Kullu to Chandigarh is roughly 250–270 km, usually 6 to 7½ hours by taxi: down the Beas through Bhuntar and the Aut tunnel to Mandi, onto the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane past Bilaspur, and across the plains through Kiratpur and Ropar into the Tricity. It's the usual way home after a Kullu or Parvati valley holiday, and Chandigarh's airport and fast trains make it a good onward connection. Leave Kullu after breakfast and you're in Chandigarh by mid-afternoon. We pick you up from your Kullu hotel, Bhuntar or the riverside stays along the highway, and drop you anywhere in the Tricity.
Usual route: Down the Beas via the Aut tunnel and Mandi, then the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane, Kiratpur and Ropar

Driving tips for this route
- 1Leave Kullu by 8 am to reach Chandigarh by mid-afternoon.
- 2The Pandoh–Aut gorge, just south of Kullu, is the slowest stretch.
- 3For a flight from Chandigarh, leave a buffer of three hours; monsoon slides can hold traffic.
- 4The four-lane from Nerchowk to Kiratpur has made the second half quick.
- 5We can also pick up from Kasol, Jibhi or Tirthan; the route joins at Bhuntar or Aut.

Drop at your hotel
Where in the Tricity we can drop you
We drop anywhere in the Tricity: homes and hotels in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, Chandigarh airport, Chandigarh railway station, and ISBT Sector 43 or 17. For a flight or train, tell us the time when you book and we'll plan the pickup with a buffer for the hill roads.
Flights and trains from Chandigarh
Chandigarh airport has flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities, and the station has fast trains to Delhi. Many Kullu visitors use Chandigarh as their exit instead of driving all the way to Delhi. For an evening flight or train, leave Kullu by 8 am; for a morning departure, stay the night in Chandigarh.
Kullu–Manali airport at Bhuntar is closer, but its flights are limited and often affected by weather, so Chandigarh is the more reliable option.
Ending a Parvati valley or Banjar valley trip
If you've been staying in Kasol, Manikaran, Jibhi or Tirthan rather than Kullu, we pick up there instead. From Kasol, the route goes down to Bhuntar; from Jibhi or Tirthan, it joins the highway at Aut. Both save coming into Kullu town and take about the same time to Chandigarh.
- From Kasol: via Bhuntar
- From Jibhi or Tirthan: via Aut
- From Manali: add about 1½ hours
Stops on the way
Mandi is the natural break, about two hours from Kullu, with its old temples and the Seri Manch market. Further on, the four-lane runs above the Govind Sagar reservoir near Bilaspur, and Kiratpur Sahib's gurudwara is a good last stop before the plains. Tell the driver if you'd like longer breaks.
Planning your departure day
The drive from Kullu is predictable once you're past Mandi, but the first two hours, through the Pandoh–Aut gorge, can vary with road work and traffic. An 8 am start avoids the worst of the trucks and tourist traffic and gets you into Chandigarh by mid-afternoon. In the monsoon, leave earlier still: slides tend to happen after heavy overnight rain, and road crews clear them through the morning.
If you're catching a flight, tell us the departure time and terminal when you book. We'll suggest a pickup with a three-hour buffer and keep you updated on the road status the evening before. If a slide closes the road, the driver will look for the quickest alternative or wait it out with you.
- Leave by 8 am
- Earlier in the monsoon
- Three-hour buffer before flights
