Overview
Chandigarh to Chitkul is roughly 355–370 km, usually 11 to 12½ hours of driving: up the NH5 through Shimla and Narkanda, along the Sutlej to Karcham, then up the Baspa valley through Sangla to Chitkul at about 3,450 m. It's best done over two days. Chitkul is the last village on the road towards the Tibet frontier, and arriving in one go means a very long day and a big jump in altitude. A night in Narkanda, Sarahan or Sangla on the way makes the trip comfortable. We pick you up anywhere in the Tricity, at the airport or the station, and drive you all the way with one driver.

Driving tips for this route
- 1Plan two days: Chandigarh to Narkanda or Sarahan, then on to Chitkul; or Chandigarh to Sangla, then a short hop up.
- 2The road beyond Sangla is narrow and partly unpaved; book an SUV or Innova.
- 3Monsoon landslides on the Sutlej highway can hold traffic for hours.
- 4From November to April, snow can close the Sangla–Chitkul road; check before booking.
- 5No permit is needed for Chitkul.

Why two days
Chitkul sits about 3,100 m higher than Chandigarh. Climbing that much in a single day, after eleven-plus hours in a car, is a reliable way to arrive exhausted with a headache. Stopping a night at Sangla, at about 2,700 m, or at Narkanda, at about 2,700 m, lets your body adjust and keeps the hardest stretch of road, Karcham to Chitkul, for a fresh morning.
If you're short of time, one long day is possible with a 4–5 am start, but we'll only plan it for experienced travellers in good health.
What to expect in Chitkul
Chitkul is a small village of wooden and stone houses around the temple of Mathi Devi, with fields running down to the Baspa river and snow peaks all around. Accommodation is simple guesthouses and small hotels; power and mobile signal can be patchy. Evenings are cold even in summer, so bring warm layers, a power bank and some cash.
- Riverside walks
- Mathi Devi temple
- Rakchham meadows on the way
- Quiet evenings under the peaks
A Kinnaur loop from Chandigarh
Chitkul fits into a classic five- to seven-day Kinnaur loop: Chandigarh to Narkanda or Sarahan, on to Sangla, a night in Chitkul, then Kalpa for the Kinner Kailash sunrise, and back via Rampur and Shimla. It's one of the most rewarding road trips in Himachal, and much quieter than the Shimla–Manali circuit. One car for the whole trip saves arranging local taxis in Kinnaur.
Coming back
The return from Chitkul to Chandigarh is just as long, so the same advice applies: a night in Sangla, Sarahan or Shimla on the way down. If you have a flight from Chandigarh, plan to arrive the evening before; landslides on the Sutlej highway can delay you by hours.
What to pack for Chitkul
Chitkul is cold and remote compared with anywhere you'll pass on the way. Even in June, nights drop close to freezing, so bring a proper jacket, a warm hat and gloves, and thermal layers for sleeping. Sunscreen and sunglasses matter at 3,450 m, where the sun is strong. Carry cash, because card machines and ATMs are unreliable beyond Reckong Peo, and a power bank, as power cuts are common. A small first-aid kit with headache tablets and oral rehydration salts is worth having too.
For the drive itself, keep water, snacks and a warm layer within reach rather than in the boot. Dhabas are spread out after Rampur, and the driver will stop at the reliable ones.
