Overview

Chandigarh to McLeod Ganj is roughly 245–255 km, usually 5½ to 7 hours by taxi through Ropar, Nangal and Una, then across the Kangra valley and up the hill from lower Dharamshala. That makes it an easy daylight drive: leave the Tricity after breakfast and you're in McLeod Ganj by mid-afternoon, in time for the evening walk around the Tsuglagkhang temple complex. Many travellers fly or take the train into Chandigarh precisely because it's the closest big gateway. We pick you up anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula, or at the airport or station, and drop you at your hotel in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot.

Why Chandigarh is the easy gateway

From Delhi, McLeod Ganj is a ten-hour-plus drive. Starting from Chandigarh cuts that roughly in half, and the city has good train and flight connections. Many travellers take an early Shatabdi or flight to Chandigarh, then drive up the same day, arriving in daylight.

On the way back, the drive works just as well in reverse: leave McLeod Ganj after breakfast and you're in Chandigarh for an evening train or flight. Allow a buffer of an hour or two for traffic before any departure.

Dropping you in McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square with narrow, partly one-way lanes running off it, and parts of Jogiwara Road and Temple Road are closed to through traffic at busy times. Cars can reach most hotels on the main roads, but some guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a short walk from the last point a vehicle can stop. Share your guesthouse name when you book and the driver will plan the nearest drop.

Things to do once you arrive

The Tsuglagkhang complex, with the main temple and Namgyal monastery, is the heart of McLeod Ganj. From there, it's a short walk or drive to Bhagsunag temple and Bhagsu waterfall, and up to Dharamkot's cafés. The Triund walk, about 9 km each way to a grassy ridge at around 2,850 m, starts above town. Lower down, the cricket stadium, Norbulingka Institute and Kangra Fort make good half-day outings with a car.

  • Tsuglagkhang and Namgyal monastery
  • Bhagsunag and Bhagsu waterfall
  • Dharamkot and the Triund trail
  • Norbulingka Institute and Kangra Fort by car

Kids, older passengers and motion sickness

The first half of the drive, through Ropar and Nangal, is flat and easy. After Una, the road winds through the Kangra hills for two to three hours, and the final climb from lower Dharamshala is the steepest part. If anyone in your group gets car-sick, seat them in front, keep a window open, eat lightly before the hills and ask the driver for a break at Kangra. With small children, plan a longer lunch stop in Una or Kangra; the extra half-hour makes the afternoon far more pleasant.
