Landing in Amritsar for McLeod Ganj

Amritsar's airport has international flights and frequent domestic ones, which is why many overseas visitors use it for McLeod Ganj instead of connecting through Delhi to Kangra. From arrivals, it's a five- to six-hour drive, mostly on fast highway until Pathankot. If your flight arrives after about 1 pm, a night in Amritsar is better: you can see the Golden Temple in the evening and set off fresh the next morning, arriving in daylight.

Golden Temple first?

If you have time, the Golden Temple is worth a stop before heading into the hills. The driver can take you there straight from the airport, about 30–40 minutes away, and wait while you visit, before continuing to McLeod Ganj. With a morning flight, a short visit still gets you to McLeod Ganj by early evening. Tell us when you book so we plan the timing.

  • Airport to Golden Temple: about 30–40 minutes
  • A short visit adds about 2 hours
  • McLeod Ganj by early evening with a morning flight

Arriving in McLeod Ganj

The town centre is small with narrow, partly one-way lanes. Hotels on the main roads are usually door to door, while some guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a short walk from where cars stop. Share your guesthouse name and a phone number when you book.

Flying home later

When you leave, you can fly out from Kangra airport, about 45 minutes to an hour below McLeod Ganj, or drive back to Amritsar for an international flight. If you're catching an international flight from Amritsar, leave McLeod Ganj early and allow a buffer of three hours or more; hill traffic and checkpoints can add time.

For overseas visitors

If you're arriving on a long international flight, the five- to six-hour drive straight to McLeod Ganj can feel very long. Many overseas visitors prefer a night in Amritsar to recover, see the Golden Temple, and set off the next morning. If you'd rather go straight up, choose an SUV or Innova for space to rest, and ask the driver for a proper meal stop in Pathankot. Indian SIM cards and cash are easiest to sort out in Amritsar before heading into the hills.

Bir Billing Paragliding Trip Guide: Season, Getting There and Planning

Bir Billing in the Kangra valley is India's best-known paragliding site. Pilots launch from Billing, a grassy ridge at about 2,400 m, and land in fields at Bir, roughly 1,100 m lower. Most visitors come for a tandem flight with a registered pilot, then stay on for the monasteries, cafés and walks. This guide covers when you can fly, how to plan around the weather, and the quickest ways to reach Bir by road or air.

McLeod Ganj, above Dharamshala, is home to the Tibetan government-in-exile and the residence of the Dalai Lama, which gives it a character unlike anywhere else in India: monasteries, prayer flags, Tibetan cafés and the snow peaks of the Dhauladhar range just behind. Adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle Trip

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is India's classic first trip, and the Himalayan foothills of Himachal are the perfect contrast to it: cool air, pine forest and mountain towns after the heat and crowds of the plains. The question is how to connect them without wasting days. Here's how the pieces fit, with honest drive times.
