Overview
Amritsar to Dharamshala is roughly 195–210 km, usually 4½ to 5½ hours by taxi: north across the Punjab plains through Batala and Gurdaspur to Pathankot, then into the Kangra hills via Nurpur and Shahpur to Dharamshala at about 1,450 m. It links two of the best-known stops in north India, the Golden Temple and the Dalai Lama's home in exile, and it's an easy daylight drive. We pick you up from your Amritsar hotel, the station or the airport, and drop you in lower Dharamshala, near the cricket stadium or Kotwali Bazaar, or carry on up to McLeod Ganj.

- 1Leave Amritsar by 9 am to reach Dharamshala by mid-afternoon.
- 2The plains to Pathankot are quick; the hill section after Nurpur takes longer than its distance suggests.
- 3McLeod Ganj is another 30–40 minutes up the hill; tell us if that's where you're staying.
- 4Golden Temple at dawn before leaving works well.
- 5Winter fog on the Punjab plains (December–January) can slow early starts.

Drop at your hotel
Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj?
Dharamshala is two towns at different heights. Lower Dharamshala has the cricket stadium, the Kotwali Bazaar, government offices and the bus stand. McLeod Ganj, about 7–10 km up the hill, has the Dalai Lama's temple, the monasteries, most guesthouses and cafés, and the walks to Bhagsu, Dharamkot and Triund. Most visitors from abroad stay in McLeod Ganj; tell us where your hotel is when you book, and the driver will take you to the door.
Things to see in lower Dharamshala
Lower Dharamshala is worth a few hours even if you're staying higher up. The HPCA cricket stadium, with the Dhauladhar range behind it, is one of the most scenic grounds in the world. The War Memorial, the Kangra Art Museum and the Kotwali Bazaar are close by, and Norbulingka Institute, a centre for Tibetan arts, is a short drive away at Sidhbari.

Golden Temple first
If you're staying in Amritsar, the Golden Temple is at its calmest in the very early morning. Many travellers visit at dawn, have breakfast, and set off around 9 am, reaching Dharamshala by mid-afternoon. With an afternoon flight into Amritsar, it's better to stay the night and leave the next morning.
Travelling from abroad
Amritsar's international airport has direct flights from several countries, which makes it a convenient gateway for Dharamshala. Carry some cash in rupees for tea stops, and an Indian SIM or eSIM for WhatsApp calls with the driver. Drivers speak Hindi and basic English; message us on WhatsApp if you need help.
What the drive is like
The first two hours are across the flat, green farmland of Punjab's Majha region, through Batala and Gurdaspur, on a busy but good highway. At Pathankot, the road crosses into Himachal and starts to climb, gently at first through Nurpur and the lower Kangra hills, then more steeply as the Dhauladhar range rises ahead. The last hour, from Shahpur to Dharamshala, has the best views, with snow on the peaks for much of the year.
It's an easy day by Himachal standards: mostly good roads, few hairpins, and plenty of places to stop for tea. Families with young children usually manage it without trouble, especially with a break at Pathankot or Nurpur.
